National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad (NUML) has campuses across the country and two of them are functioning in Sindh i.e. in Karachi and Hyderabad. The campuses serve the language learners across the province. Both the campuses are in major cities of the province and located near to each other. Northern Sindh is deprived of academic provision.
This generation is creating forms of business and commerce and literature and art that live in the cracks left by shrinking gross domestic product (GDP) and collapsing credit. Yet, they need English language skills to make their own future and easily communicate with the world.
Though many aspiring students who wish to make their career in English Language and literature are willing to join the university, yet they have to travel to Hyderabad or Karachi to quench the thirst of knowledge. It is very difficult for students to undertake ten hour journey to reach Karachi and eight hour journey to reach Hyderabad. In these hard days, it is very difficult for poor masses to make both ends meet. On the other hand, traveling itself is a fatigue. Having no hostel for students especially girls' students is one of the biggest disadvantages to continue education.
NUML doesn't only offer degree programs, but it also offers short language courses. Students who want to polish their language skills feel a lot of problems to go to Hyderabad or Karachi. Sukkur is a centre point, which interconnects at least nine districts of Sindh province i.e. Ghotki, Khairpur, Noushero Feroze, Nawabshah, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Shikarpur, Larkana, and Qamber at Shahdadkot. It also covers southern region of Punjab and some parts of Balochistan. The institutes that come into the jurisdiction of these ten districts are Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College, Sukkur-IBA, SZABIST-Larkana, Chandka Medical College, Quaid-i-Awam Engineering and Technology University, Peoples Medical College, Shah Abdul Latif University, degree colleges of the region, postgraduate studies centers, law colleges and many other private colleges and institutions.
Sukkur is also very near to Pano Akil Cantonment where many colleges and schools of federal government and garrison serve the kids of armed forces and civilian population.
Therefore, the concerned authorities and Dr. Javed Laghari, chairman of higher education commission, are requested to establish a campus of NUML in Sukkur for interior Sindh candidates, southern Punjab, Balochistan, and cantonment troops. This will be a great service to the youth of the country especially youth of Sindh. This will not only save them from traveling, but also provide them with new avenues of jobs and services.
The country needs language teachers, interpreters, translators, and media persons. This need can be fulfilled by the help and support of NUML-Islamabad. Aspiring candidates of Sindh should also make appeals to the concerned authorities to establish the said campus in Sukkur. There are many public sector institutions like Govt. Islamia Science College Sukkur, Govt. Boys Degree College Sukkur, and Public School, Sukkur, which may provide the space and required infrastructure to NUML to run classes from new academic session.
The writer is a lecturer at Sukkur-IBA.
