Successful and long-term socioeconomic development depends on peace and stability, decent government, investments in the economy, basic health, and high skill and education levels of youth and adults. The importance of well-educated youth and adults for development is widely appreciated.
Bringing education to all children and adults is a moral responsibility of a state. Every person has a right to education, which is an essential building block for political liberties and participation, improved health, and economic advancement.
To achieve higher youth and adult education levels, the governments of developing countries have, for a number of decades, vigorously pursued the growth of education systems. International community has worked with governments and in this decade has focused on the education for all agenda.
In the developing countries like Pakistan, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) provides learning for life. Through, the achievement of its students, faculty and staff, SZABIST stands out as a provider of high quality of education. The institute has been established with the objectives of producing highly qualified, scientific and technical personnel to meet the country's requirements of conducting state-of-the-art scientific and technological research and development in support of the private and public sector, providing hi-tech scientific and technological assistance to local industry to enable it to compete with the world industries in global trading, providing highly trained scientific and technological personnel to be able to attract the growth of high-tech industries and foreign and Pakistani investment, and providing a sound socioeconomic and scientific base and infrastructure to Pakistan to be able to meet the economic and technological challenges of the 21st century.
SZABIST is a fully chartered institute established through a legislative Act of the Sindh Assembly, approved and recognized by the higher education commission (HEC), Pakistan, as a degree granting institution.
SZABIST is also listed in the CNN Executive Education Schools. SZABIST thus has the unparalleled honor of being the only Pakistani institute to be recognized internationally. Presently, SZABIST is identified as a major university comprising of four campuses, three diploma centers, three intermediate colleges and one research center.
Over 3000 degrees have been awarded by SZABIST. The institute has signed articulation agreements with the University of Wales Newport, UK and the University of Northampton, UK. SZABIST has also signed memorandum of understandings (MoUs) with the State University of New York, USA, University of London, UK, Philippines Women University, Philippines, and the Asian Academy of Film & Television, India. SZABIST has campuses in Karachi, Islamabad, Larkana and Dubai (UAE). SZABIST is a registered member of the International Association of Universities (IAU), Paris, Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), London, Federation of the Universities of Islamic World (FUIW) Rabat, Asia University Federation (AUF), Seoul, and the Association of SAARC Universities (ASU).
SZABIST has been organizing biannual National Research Conferences (NRCs) since 2002. In the beginning of 2011, it had 17th NRC in which about 80 research papers were presented from all over Pakistan in management, social sciences, economics and computing.
These types of conferences provide an opportunity to the students, academics and industry professionals to discuss recent progress in the areas of management, social sciences, economics, and computing.
SZABIST is dedicated to provide quality education and promote research activities in Pakistan. In the institute, the Centre of Renewable Energy Research (CRER) provides a platform for researchers to explore experiment and introduce renewable energy technologies for viable, practical and reliable energy solutions. The Stem Cell Research Center (SCRC) envisages the establishment of the laboratories, which focus on tissue culture of human tissues/cells. The research is attached with a great significance to the reduction of proliferation of cancer cells and targeting these programming cells to behave like beneficiary tissues.
During 2010, the foundation of Sustainable Development Research Centre (SDRC) was laid. The premise of existence of centre is to create a synergy between socioeconomic development and environment. Within this context, SDRC is trying to focus on energy, environment and sustainable business and rural development.
The institute's research laboratory is equipped with high end Pentium-IV 512mb RAM workstations, video cameras and video capture cards, color scanner, infrared bar code reader, speech recognition system and a variety of software tools. This laboratory is capable of producing high quality graphics. SZABIST's library contains a rich collection of books on most information technology and management sciences topics. The library is equipped with a multimedia/internet station to help students explore information available on CDs and the internet. The library subscribes to a number of magazines and journals to update students' knowledge on the current developments taking place nationally and internationally. The library subscribes to the IEEE/ACM digital online library through which SZABIST students can have access to online computer journals and magazines.
In Pakistan, the education levels of youth and young adults are increasing, and the next generation of the country's young adults will not only be the largest ever, but will also have received more schooling than ever. Moreover, SZABIST graduates are well placed and currently employed in a number of leading multinational corporations and in the top local companies.
