Siemens holds leading positions in three fields in Pakistan: energy and environmental care; industry and public infrastructures; and healthcare.

The Siemens IT solutions and services group functions across all the three fields. Siemens is the country's No. 1 supplier of high-voltage grid stations, switchgear products and systems, power distribution and power transformers, and network consultancy.

During 2007, sales to customers in Pakistan amounted to EUR230 million. New orders totaled at EUR280 million. With a workforce of 1,400 employees, Siemens is one of the most important employers in the country and the largest employer of engineering graduates in the country.

Directly and indirectly, Siemens provides employment to more than 4000 persons across the country.

Siemens industrial complex located in the heart of Karachi's industrial hub, the Sindh industrial trading estate (SITE), spreads across a sprawling 96,500 square meters and houses not only five factories producing motors, diesel generating sets, switchboards, transformers and the recently added factory that will produce for the first time in the country 220kV power transformers, but also the head office of the company.

Siemens is actively involved in photovoltaic business for more than 10 years. The company has installed complete solar systems in all parts of the country mainly for house electrification, telecommunication (microwave links, optical fiber and digital exchanges), water pumping, navigation, highway communication, oil and gas fields and street lighting. The company offers complete solution for meeting all the needs of energy from solar system.

The concept of using solar power for running domestic appliances is at its introductory stage. The company has few reference installations in Pakistan for this application.

A solar powered street light is installed at Siemens head office building Karachi. It is completely standalone system, which is automatically switched on in the evening and switched off in the morning.

Solar power is used in remote and un-attended stations of microwave system, TDMA, VHF and digital exchanges microwave repeater station on a hilltop at Thandiani, Abbottabad Naran digital exchange (at the altitude of 9,000 feet). It is the first and only digital exchange in Pakistan, which is powered with solar energy.

Siemens Power Generation is one of the market leaders in power generation industry. It has played a significant role in enhancing the country's power generation capacity.

As an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), Siemens offers unrivalled experience and expertise, access to the latest technology and a total commitment to supporting the products.

The company's energy automation range exhibits innovative features to assist the operator and engineers to manage their protection and control needs in order to analyze faults.

Siemens' provides total energy automation solutions for reliable and cost-effective grid operation. Reliable protection for power systems is essential. The complexity of such systems has increased as technology has progressed. As a result, integration of protection and control systems has also increased in complexity.

The company is able to assist customers to reduce these complexities by offering a complete energy automation system, including protection panels.

Mega trends have given rise to growing energy demand in the country. Subsequently, the need for efficient, smart and state of the art energy management solutions is also growing. Business unit energy automation (EA) provides a wide range of systems and solutions to enhance the network efficiency. The first latter-day load dispatch centre in the country which is being constructed by Siemens for KESC is an example.

The project will link all the grid stations in the KESC network to the load dispatch centre which will provide network monitoring and control in the normal situations as well as the peak demand situations from a single location, ensuring maximum availability and reliability of the network.

Energy automation has been a strong contributor in the protection and control solutions for 132kV, 220kV and 500kV systems too.

Currently, siemens is supplying control and protection panels to Ghakkar 500/220/132kV grid station.

In today's competitive world, majority of the companies are finding ways to remain focused on their core activities. For the upkeep, safety and availability of their plants and machineries, partners are required as all installations, systems and equipments demand regular service and maintenance.

PTD Services provides this support to the valued customers. Siemens Pakistan Engineering Co. Ltd. and New Park Energy Ltd. (NPEL) have signed a contract for the supply of electrical part on turnkey basis for NPEL 50MW wind power project near Gharo.

Rising energy and petrochemical demands require constant improvement of technologies and services. The world is heading towards different economies of scale and so is Siemens. Known to the world as a global powerhouse in electrical engineering and electronics, decades of strategic acquisition and successful integrations have shaped the company into a source of unparalleled offerings for the oil and gas industry. The company is fully equipped to meet the challenges of tomorrow efficiently, thus serving their customers to their utmost satisfaction.
