It is a fact in nature that even a small and tiny seed on germination usually becomes a remarkable small or big tree, having flowers of different colors, sweet and sour fruits, grains and beautiful leaves and twigs. Seeds that vary in size, color, and shape are the most important part of the crops or plants.
Agriculturists grow any type of crop seed for getting grown crops or plants/trees and finally seeds, grains, flowers etc. meant for human use, for livestock and for sowing purposes.
There is a brief description of some seeds useful for all living beings. No life on earth can exist without eating seeds or grains - as without inhaling 'Oxygen'.
ALMONDS (BADAM) SEEDS: Mostly almonds contain sugar, fat, dietary fat, protein, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin E, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc. Almonds keep the memory sharp and prevent cancer. In Ayurvedic and Tibb-e-Unani systems, almond oil is prescribed as a brain and nervous tonic. Almond is also a component of various sweet dishes.
AMALTAS (AMALTA) SEEDS: The pulp from the fruits called cassia pulp is a well-known laxative and generally used in the treatment.
CARAWAY (SHAH ZEERA) SEEDS: The caraway seeds, leaves and roots are considered useful in activating the glands, besides increasing the action of the kidneys. It is characterised as an excellent 'house cleaner' for the body. Caraway oil is used in medicine to relieve flatulence. It is also used to control the nauseating and griping effects of some medicines. Caraway seeds are useful in strengthening the functions of stomach. Its oil is used orally in overcoming bad breath or insipid taste also applied to treat flatulence and stomach disorders.
CAROM (AJWAIN) SEEDS: Ajwan seeds are small in size but taste hot. Penchant, bitter, appetiser, laxative, stomachic, aphrodisiac, and it is used as effective remedy in managing ailments like vomiting, disease of heart and mouth, pile, abdominal tumor, abdominal pain etc. According to Unani stream of medicine, Ajwain is considered bitter and hot in taste, carminative and diuretic in nature and effective remedy of disease like paralysis, weakness of limbs, pain in chest, liver disease, hiccup, problem of spleen, dyspepsia malfunctioning of kidney etc. Ajwain is consumed as stomach tonic. Ajwain seeds are soaked in water overnight, in the next morning intake of this water in empty stomach helps in digestion and cure of acute dyspepsia. It is blood purifying agent. Ajwain seeds are also used for common cold, cough, kidney pain, and in respiratory problem. Seeds are also used as appetiser. In kidney-stone removal homemade herbal remedy of Ajwain works well. Patients are to intake Ajwain seeds with honey or vinegar for a week regularly. This medicine helps to remove stone with urine flow as claimed by the users.
CASTOR (ARANDI) SEEDS: A poultice of castor seeds can be applied with beneficial result to gouty and rheumatic swellings. A decoction of the roots of castor plant with carbonate of potash is useful in the treatment of lumbago, rheumatism, and sciatica. If used regularly as hair oil, it helps the growth of hair and cure dandruff. Castor oil is a simple, harmless purgative, and can be used without any rigid consideration. Oil is cathartic, purgative, and laxative. Castor oil is regarded as one of the best laxative and purgative preparations available. It is of particular benefit for children and pregnant women due to its mild action in easing constipation. Castor oil eases complaints such as ringworms, itch, and leprosy.
CHIA (TARBOOZ KA BEEJ) SEEDS: These seeds are from the mint family. Extremely tiny, yet extremely potent, these small seeds are packed full of fiber, essential fats, complex carbohydrates, protein (20 per cent), enzymes, nutrient oils, various antioxidants, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, and many other nutrients. Studies show that Chia seeds stabilise the blood sugar, lower our risks for cardiovascular disease, as well as increase weight loss. These amasing little seeds are an excellent source of high-quality fats, as they are made up of a whopping 62 per cent pure omega-3 alpha - linolenic acid. Chia contains important micronutrients including B-complex vitamins. Chia seeds reduce blood sugar swings and support conditions of hypoglycemia and diabetes.
CUMIN (ZEERA) SEEDS: Cumin seeds are stimulant, carminative, antispasmodic, and very useful in digestive disorders like biliousness, morning sickness, indigestion, atonics dyspepsia, diarrhea, mal-absorption syndrome, and flatulent colic. Black cumin is beneficial in the treatment of piles. Cumin is valuable in relieving sleeplessness and insomnia.
EUCALYPTUS (SAFEDA) SEEDS: Eucalyptus appears to help relieve symptoms of cols, flu, chest congestion, sore throat, bronchitis, pneumonia, and respiratory infections. For internal use eucalyptus can be made into a tea or tincture. Externally, the antiseptic, anesthetic, anti-bacterial and treatment for burns, sores, ulcer, scrapes, boils, and wounds. Applied topically as an oil or ointment, it also helps to relieve the pain of rheumatism, aching, pains, stiffness, and neuralgia. Rubbed into the chest, it relieves congestion and cough. For relief of congestion and respiratory problems, boil the leaves of the tree in covered pot of water and then inhale the vapors.
HEMP SEEDS: Hemp seeds are truly a super food, as they are packed with an impressive list of nutritional attributes. Perfectly balanced with a three to one omega-6 to omega-3 oil ratio, they are also an excellent source of gamma linoleic and stearidonic acid. Containing 10 essential amino acids, hemp seeds are composed of over 30 per cent pure protein, making them an excellent daily protein source. They are also composed of 40 per cent fiber, the highest amount of any grain on earth. Studies show that hemp seeds, or even hemp milk, may prevent heart disease, many forms of cancer, as well as inflammation-based diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
ISPAGHULA (ISABGOL) SEEDS: Ispaghula seeds are a valuable remedy for several kinds of chronic dysentery and diarrhea, in case of heaviness in the stomach. Its seeds are highly beneficial in treating piles. Its rich tannin content cures inflammation and ulceration in the intestinal tract up to the anus.
LIN (ALSI) SEEDS: The seeds are useful in the treatment of gonorrhea, irritations of the genitor urinary organs, nephritis, and cystitis. It is remedy for colds, coughs, sore chest, throat, and pulmonary complaints. A loose poultice of the seeds can be applied with excellent results in chest troubles and diseases like pneumonia, bronchitis, bronco- pneumonia and pleurisy. They are valued for oil, used in varnishes and cooking. The seeds are rich in oil and protein. Alsi seeds are also diuretic, emollients and used to treat gastrointestinal disorders. One or two spoonfuls of the seeds taken at night ease constipation. The seeds are also effective remedy for burns, scalds, and skin diseases like eczema and herpes. Its oil is also used for removing blemishes from the face.
MELON (KHARBUZ) SEEDS: Seeds have many purposes. They are diuretic, ease constipation, are good for kidney functions, reduce hypertension and dyspepsia, prevent cardiac problems and have anti-gout and anti-rheumatic properties. It has many uses in Unani systems.
NEEM (NIM) SEEDS: Neem seeds, leaves as well as oil have active properties of immune stimulant, hypoglycemia, anti-malarial, anti-fungal antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-oxidant. The leaves extract has nanny useful properties for use in human health.
OLIVE (ZAITOON) SEEDS: They can aid in treating gout, and also used in lowering blood pressure, lowering blood sugar levels. Effective in control of HIV virus, herpes virus and all flu virus, olive leaf has been used for centuries to treat wounds, hemorrhoids, to clean liver, to reduce fever, as a general antiseptic. Also used for treating chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, coughs, psoriasis, malaria and it also treats things such as athlete's foot botulism, encephalitis, lice, hepatitis, pneumonia, bladder infections, warts, and a long list of other afflictions, all related to the cause of bacteria and virus. It is also used in treating rheumatoid arthritis.
Olive oil from the fruit is used to improve the balances of fats in the blood, is protective to the digestive tract, and soothes dry skin externally. It keeps the heart and arteries healthy and flexible and regular use is shown to prevent a buildup of cholesterol in the arteries. Olive oil rubbed daily into patches of eczema, dandruff and psoriasis can educe itching and speed healing.
PEANUTS (MUNGFALI) SEEDS: Salted and salt-free peanuts are eaten with great delight by all ages of people and the demand for freshly-roasted groundnuts increases manifolds as winter sets in. Chemically, peanuts are rich in nutrients and provide many essential nutrients. They contain folate, niacin, vitamin E, phosphorus, fiber, magnesium, and maintains cholesterol levels. Peanuts are good source of edible oil. They are also used in cosmetic, soaps, and lubricants.
POPPY (KHUS-KHUS) SEEDS: These seeds popularly known as khus-khus in some countries of Asian continent, are obtained from poppy flowers. These seeds owe their origination in Orient and Greece. We may also find these seeds grown in different countries like India, China, Turkey, Iran, Holland, and Canada. These seeds are used in various forms to add worth to our diet. Apart from offering good taste, these seeds are also advantageous in providing health benefits to human body. Poppy seeds are good at adding flavor to a number of food items like breads, rolls, cookies and cakes. We may depend upon these seeds to add delight to our party menus. People across the globe make use of ground poppy seeds in dishing up various types of desserts. Poppy seeds are also utilised as thickening agents for various types of sauces available in the market. Poppy seeds are also used in cooking different dishes like vegetables, noodles, and fishes to add flavor and aroma to these items. Poppy seeds are store houses for opium, which is considered as a useful ingredient for preparing various herbal medicines. However, criminal minds treat it as a narcotic drug and make illegitimate use of these seeds. Thus, we must make use of opium present in poppy seeds in medicines rather than making drugs. PUMPKIN (KADDO) SEEDS: Some scientific studies have shown that the components of pumpkin seeds may stop the triggering of cancerous behavior in male prostate cells. Pumpkin seeds are high in a form of antioxidant known as carotenoids, a special plant derivative that enhances immune activity and disease fighting capacities. Their seeds are also high in omega-3 fatty acids and zinc, two important nutrients that may play a role in warding off inflammation, arthritis and osteoporosis. Finally, pumpkin seeds are high in phytosterols, plant components that aid in keeping stable levels of cholesterol, enhanced immune response, as well as cancer-fighting attributes.
PULSES (DAL) SEEDS: Pulse an edible seed grows in a pod. Pulses are a great source of protein for vegetarians, but they are also a very healthy choice for meat-eaters. SAFFRON (ZAAFRAN) SEEDS: This strengthens the functioning of stomach and promotes its action. It is beneficial in the treatment several digestive disorders, especially flatulent coli. Saffron is also beneficial in treating skin disorders. A paste of the herb can be used as a dressing for bruises and superficial.
SESAME (TIL) SEEDS: Traditional societies have touted the positive benefits of this seed for thousands of years. Sesame seeds are very high in calcium, magnesium, zinc, fiber, iron, B1, and phosphorus. Sesame seeds are unique in their chemical structure.
Studies show that these seeds can lower blood pressure, as well as protect the liver from damage. Sesame seeds also may help prevent arthritis, asthma, migraine headaches, menopause, osteoporosis, anemia, piles, hair, disorders etc.
SUNFLOWER (SURAJMUKHI) SEEDS: Sunflower seed oil is used in preparation of vegetable ghee, soaps, and cosmetics. They contain many nutrients like sodium, carbohydrates, sugar, fiber and protein. They promote healthy digestion and increase fiber intake. Sunflower seeds are also extremely rich in folate, a very important nutrient for women. They are packed full of good fats, antioxidant-rich vitamin E, selenium, and copper, all crucial elements in preventing heart disease, cancer, and other forms of troublesome cellular damage.
