Sir Syed University of Science and Technology, which has earned a reputation of a Center of Excellence imparting quality education and helping graduates in their career building, has acquired 200 acres of land in the Education City in the outskirts of Karachi. The University plans to set up an IT park with the state of the art facilities. The university is also actively pursuing plans to set up facilities for new and emerging technologies at this site.

Z.A. Nizami the Chancellor of the Sir Syed University disclosed that top class global universities are in contact with the SSUET for collaboration in developing the IT park of the Sir Syed University that would give new horizon to this University of Pakistan, he said in a firm tone while talking to this correspondent in an interview.

Veteran Z.A.Nizami, who served Karachi as the Chief of Karachi Development Authority, naturally has deep association with the development of Karachi. Under his dynamic leadership the students of Sir Syed University besides taking strides in science and technology are also focusing on innovative ideas for the development of basic amenities and infrastructure of Karachi by doing research work relentlessly.

Actually, Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology has been sponsored by Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys' Association of Pakistan, Karachi. The association decided to establish a high class university of engineering and technology as a centre of excellence offering instructions of international standard with integrated programs dealing with the fast growing technologies of the world with courses designed to produce qualified personnel of high caliber specializing in new technologies needed in developing countries.

While outlining the outstanding performance of the university, Nizami said that the SSUET has achieved a commendable position during the short period of its existence. Its most modern and fully equipped labs, highly qualified and dedicated faculty, the guidance and support of its sponsors have contributed to make it a Centre of Excellence at the national as well as international level. Its programs are accredited by Pakistan Engineering Council and Higher Education Commission. Internationally, it has won recognition in full membership of Association of Commonwealth Universities and UNESCO sponsored International Association of Universities.

When invited his attention towards the high price of education which is normally beyond the reach of average income group and how our universities would contribute to spreading the light of education to the grass root level as getting education is the fundamental right of every citizens.

The chancellor with a smile on his face agreed that the cost of education is high, yet for hiring services of quality teachers 'we have to pay them'. "However the university strictly ensures that no one having potential and who deserves is sent back for want of money." He said that the degrees of the University are recognized world over which of course gives a sense of achievement not only to the university but also the graduates from SSUET.

In fact, the admissions to the University are allowed strictly on merit, based on academic record, aptitude test, and interview. The University however takes care of the deserving students by granting scholarships and other financial assistance to the deserving students on the basis of merit and need, he said with a sense of satisfaction.

The University takes great pride in the fact that it follows its academic calendar strictly and all the activities are in accordance with the schedule.

Replying to a question regarding role of education sector for achievement of knowledge based and sustainable economic growth, he said that Sir Syed University has been awarding degrees since 1998. The University provides excellent facilities to its students for sports, declamation and debates and encourages their participations in seminars, competitions at national and international levels. The success of SSUET team in software competition held by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of USA in 2005 is an indication of the quality of education being disseminated at SSUET. THE University puts great emphasis on co-curricular activities also. The establishment of an International Research Centre, in collaboration with US based researchers to conduct research in emerging technology, the strengthening of teaching facilities through "distance teaching program, using Video conference, are the recent improvements at Sir Syed University, he said and added that this indicates the constant endeavor the university continues as a Center of Excellence.

Z.A. Nizami said that SSUET has a unique system of providing guidance to its students for building up their future career through its acclaimed career planning and placement bureau by arranging on job training and internship besides helping them in securing jobs. In fact, SSUET is gaining the prestigious level of producing graduates who get jobs offerings while in their final stages at the university.

Regarding role of the Sir Syed University for the cause of the development of the city, Nizami said that service to society is a priority area of training. Recently the university has proposed disaster relief for earthquake, rainfall and flood relief emergency plans, which were widely appreciated. It is presently engaged in setting up links and collaboration with the industry to identify "employment oriented disciplines".


The total liquid foreign reserves held by the country stood at $ 11,838.4 million on 27th June, 2009.

The break-up of the foreign reserves position is as under:-

i) Foreign reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan: $8,549.0 million
ii) Net foreign reserves held by banks (other than SBP): $3,289.4 million
iii) Total liquid foreign reserves: $11,838.4 million
