GREEN TEA CAN MAKE YOU BEAUTIFUL!
June 8 - 14, 2009
Nature has kept many blessings in her lap for human beings to heal their concealed and revealed pains. The effect of nature's extract is green tea. You probably already know that drinking green tea has plenty of health benefits - but do you know that it can make you more beautiful?
Here are some of the facts that green tea researchers have found:
- It helps your gums stay healthy so your teeth don't fall out.
- The Vitamin C in green tea helps your gums heal. Acids and bacteria in your mouth are the main causes of periodontal disease (soft, bleeding gums). Green tea contains "catechins." It keeps the acids in check and they prevent the bacteria from reproducing and your gums stay nice and healthy and pink, and your teeth stay in.
- It prevents cavities and bad breath. (Cavities and bad breath are caused by acids and bacteria)
- It helps you look young by smoothing out your wrinkles and by reducing damage to your skin from UV rays. They also reactivate dying skin cells. Green tea contains anti-oxidants (cancer-fighters) that reduce the damage that the UV light in normal sunlight does to your skin. This slows down the aging process and helps you look younger, longer.
- It helps you lose weight. Catechins help to decrease body fat and speed up fat oxidation.
Green tea is an extract of "camellia sinesis" bush. It is neither yellow nor green, or of any color. It is also called Chinese tea, Japanese tea.
Ordinary tea comes from the leaves of the camellia sinensis plant. There are three main types of tea: green tea, oolong tea, and black tea, categorized according to their oxidation levels (called the fermentation process). Green tea is steamed, baked, or pan heated to prevent oxidation and thus the leaves remain green. Unlike green tea, oolong tea is partially fermented, and black tea is fully fermented.
The best thing to acknowledge about green tea is its effect in lowering cholesterol as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol. It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, which pays hazardous role in deposition of fats in peripheral tissues.
In 1994, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute has showed the results of an epidemiological study indicating that green tea decreases the risk of esophageal cancer by nearly sixty percent. University of Purdue researchers recently concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells, Epigallocatechin gallate, EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant. Besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue, improving mental alertness and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clot like thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) leading cause of heart attacks and stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, infection, and impaired immune function. It also assists in weight loss and fighting the build-up of atheromatous plaque in the arteries as well.
Why is green tea getting all the attention in the science world? It's mainly because of the antioxidant epigallocatechin-3 gallate (EGCG ), the main component considered good for one's health which is preserved in green tea but lost in oolong and black varieties when fermented. Antioxidants are thought to prevent free radicals.
What exactly is a Free Radical? A free radical is any molecular species capable of independent existence that contains one or more unpaired electrons not contributing to intermolecular bonding, and is, in that sense, "free". They are produced by oxidation/reduction reactions.
In the human body, oxidized free radicals are believed to cause tissue damage at the cellular level, causing damage to our DNA, mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell), and cell membrane, and have often been referred to as one of the causes attributed to aging, cancer, heart disease, and other human ailments harmful to one's health.
Excessive alcohol intake, smoking, and various chemical exposures only serve to increase the amount of free radicals present in the body. To prevent free radical damage the body has a defense system of antioxidants.
What exactly is an Antioxidant? Antioxidants are molecules, which can safely interact with free radicals and terminate the chain reaction before vital molecules are damaged (as in Vitamin C), or seek out and scavenge free radicals (as in Vitamin E).
Antioxidants found in green tea ( Epigallocatechin 3-gallate a.k.a. EGCG ) has been found to be much more powerful than both Vitamins C and E. Compared to other known antioxidants, EGCG was found to be 100 times more effective than vitamin C, 25 times more effective than Vitamin E and twice as powerful at neutralizing free radicals.
Green Tea and Weight Loss - One pound of fat is equivalent to approximately 3500 calories. In order to lose one pound of fat over the period of a week, a person must maintain a calorie deficit of 3500 below their normal "set point", that "set point" being the amount of calories consumed in one's diet where a person neither loses nor gains fat. This calorie deficit can come through the modification of diet, through exercise, or a through a combination of both. In the case of a pound per week weight loss, that works out to a needed calorie deficit of 500 calories per day.
Research by Japanese and other researchers suggest that if the average person were to drink five cups of green tea a day, they would burn an extra 70 to 80 extra calories through an effect known as thermogenesis - the process of heat production in organisms.
Regardless, 70-80 calories per day does not quite come close to the 500 calorie deficit needed per day to lose a pound a week.
If a person is to change nothing outside of adding five cups of green tea to their diet per day, then over the course of 43 days one could expect to lose 1 pound. Over the period of one year, one could expect a loss of about 8 pounds. Yes, there is some correlation between green tea and weight loss. Clearly, drinking green tea alone is not going to be satisfactory for significant weight loss. If you are serious about losing weight, we still definitely do recommend green tea as a complement to a sound nutrition and exercise regime.

Green tea is highly recommended for aged, obese, smokers and heart patients to consume green tea on daily basis as it keeps primarily beneficial effects for their health.
Despite of its many advantages green tea does contain some drawbacks. A very little amount of caffeine is also present in it which can cause bit insomnia, but that amount is not equal to the caffeine in coffee so it's less hazardous. The caffeine in green tea may cause irregular heartbeat (arrhythmias), worsen existing anxiety disorders, or increase the blood pressure. So, it is advised not to take it before bedtime. Caffeine can cause insomnia, restlessness, irritability, stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, or frequent urination.
