Nov 24 - 30, 2008

I hope this issue will be raised and supported by other eminent educationists, teachers, columnists, editors of newspapers and journalists.

Chair, chair, chair everywhere, but no conspicuous work to see anywhere. On October 14, 2008 worthy Chief Minister of Sindh announced establishment of one more chair at Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur. This chair will be after the name of world renowned daughter of the East Muhtrama Benazir Bhutto shaheed. Neither this news was very amazing, nor was it making us sad. We read everyday; the government functionaries make such announcements across the country. A common person has no interest in such news items. Who are we to object? Rather why should we object? Now, every old street is renamed as Shaheed Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto street, Every Airport is Shaheed Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto airport, every park is Shaheed Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto park, every tournament is Shaheed Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto tournament, but one thing that pinches us hard is that why they don't establish new projects, new roads, new bridges, new plants, new industries, banks and educational institutes. Why only old things which are already on somebody else's credit are renamed. Even, it is against the set codes of society. But who cares who?

In the era of SMBB ( Shaheed Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto), she didn't change the names in this way. She didn't even change the name of Moen-jo-Daro airport which is her home district airport. Though she had all privileges and rights to change it as Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Airport, but she didn't do that because she knew the importance and sanctity of history.

Let me count how many chairs already exist across the Sindh province.

1. Shah Abdul Latif Bhitaai Chair University of Karachi.
2. Allam I I Kazi Chair University of Sindh, Jamshoro.
3. Allama Daudpoto chair University of Sindh, Jamshoro
4. Sachal Chair Shah Abdul Latif University, Khp
5. Dr. Tanveer Abbasi Chair SALU, Khp.
6. Shaikh Ayaz Chair SALU, Khp
7. Pir Sibghatullah Shah Rashdi Chair SALU, Khp.

Now, the number eighth is Shaheed Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto Chair, Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur. Apart from these chairs, there a lot of corners also. Establishing chair is not a problem, but to manage it properly is more than a problem. The professors, who are selected to occupy the big chair, remain content with VC's and those who don't, show other side of coin.

Is there any minister any authority who may tell us the accomplishments and achievements of these chairs except SAL Bhittai chair Karachi where scholars like Dr. Dure-e-Shahwar Syed, Dr. Nawaz Shouq and Dr. Fahmida Memon did a lot of work? The rest chairs cheer only. The head of the chairs enjoy the vehicle, telephone, electricity, gas and other perks and privileges. The staff is appointed to please and look after the head of the chair. Is it a wise decision of the government to establish such countless chairs? May we know the benefits of these chairs to the people of Sindh? We have no objections against the names of these legends that made the history with their struggles and endeavors, yet we are not happy to see name boards only. If our worthy Chief Minister is so loyal and sincere with the mission of Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto, why not he orders establishment of such university, which may be a new ray of hope for the downtrodden people of Pakistan and the world. Is it not possible to establish such university in Larkana district? The native town of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, and Shaheed Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto where education may be provided to meritorious students free of cost? A university may be established on the pattern of MIT, Harvard-USA, London School of Economics-UK, if not even NU Singapore. At least this gift may be given to the poor people of Sindh. This will not only keep the history alive, but it will also tell the posterity that how sincere workers of the party paid tribute to their great leaders. This is a right way to pay tribute our beloved leaders.

We are completely disappointed over such gesture of government to rename all what happened in the past. This is a mockery with history and history makes its record candidly, either we like it or not. It is easy to say Jeay Bhutto, but difficult to prove it. What yet has been done so far by our worthy cabinet and the chief Minister that is not impressive to tell someone? The same culture is prevailing as it was, same education system is existing as it was, same slogans are chanted everywhere "Band karo, Band karo......plants bechna band karo, Band Karo band karo dhashat gardi band karo, bhata khori band kari,.......khatam karo khatm karo.....mehngai khatam karo" who will listen to voices of destitute and forlorn people of Pakistan and specially those of Sindh.? I hope my views will arrest the attention of all thoughtful educationists, editors of the newspapers, columnists, journalists, lawyers, and civil society members to appeal to the government to do something which may give us new life.
