KHALIL AHMED, Senior Correspondent
Feb 05 - 11, 2007
Dr. Nadeem Syed, HOD - MS, is a PhD from Aquinas University, Philippines. He possesses a rich variety of experience in teaching, human resource management, research, organizational behavior and leadership courses. He has an extensive working experience of around 20 years in local and multinational companies, like Oriental Marketing Services UK, Pak Steel Mills, Lakson Tobacoo Industries, etc. He has expertise in acting as an agent of change and turning around as an HR specialist. Other than the corporate working experience in and outside Pakistan, Dr Syed has more than a dozen research papers to his credit in the area of Human Resource Development, Corporate Governance, E-commerce and Knowledge Management that have been published in varoius international journals. He has also contributed to various international text books. In the area of Education Management, he possesses more that eight years of experience as the department head of Management Science at the Bahria University, Karachi, where his responsibilities spread from academic development to administrative execution in all necessary areas. Dr Syed has joined FAST-NU with a mission to help strengthen a good program in business education.
The Business Administration program was launched at FAST-NU Karachi campus in the year 2004. This program was introduced owing to the growing demand of managers who have to be well versed with the upcoming challenges of technology and global market understanding. Advancement being the forte of NU-FAST, producing a batch of managers with a vision to manage change - facilitated by the strong technological infrastructure already present at all campuses - was not a difficult task. Also, quality faculty search is still in progress to bring about the best mix of hardware and software in this department to make a head start. The Department of Management Sciences was initially headed by Dr Mahfooz Ali, who possessed a rich variety of experience in teaching, management development, research, administration and banking. He had been the first pro vice chancellor of the University of Karachi, the Director of research at UBL and the Managing Director of Owena Bank of Nigeria. The department started a small new program in 2004, and it witnessed considerable expansion in the size of student body and teaching faculty as well as providing a purpose-built campus in the heart of the city, to rub shoulders with the corporate sector, and to attract even better quality of personnel on the premises.
Currently the department is smoothly progressing under the leadership of Dr Nadeem A Syed. PAGE approached Dr Nadeem A Syed for an interview. When asked what he feels where FAST-NU stands in the market, Dr Nadeem A Syed replied by presenting two perceptions, one; what is FAST-NU from inside and the other FAST-NU from outside. He said that FAST-NU is facing fierce competition at present as compared to a decade earlier. Dr. Nadeem Syed was of the opinion that the people outside FAST don't know much about Management Sciences program of FAST-NU but our management students will prove one day, when they graduate (first batch is due to pass out) from here. Our graduates will surely leave a lasting impression in the minds of their prospective employers with their management skills and I am confident that our graduates will compete with the graduates from the leading business schools of our country.
Sharing his views with PAGE about the future of FAST-NU graduates Dr. Nadeem Syed showed the "VISION" document that would be used as a basis of Management Sciences program. It entails the aims and objectives. He said that as far as the management is concerned, we are working day in and day out to provide proper infrastructure in the City Campus situated in PECHS block-6. He talked about the induction of some new faculty members who will be joining soon. Talking about the students of today in general, Dr. Nadeem Syed was of the view that they must focus and increase the level of determination and dedication towards knowledge-based education if they are to ensure their survival in the market. When asked about future targets of FAST-NU business school, he said: "My foremost objective or goal is to create awareness in the market about our existence as a quality business school. We also need to install the right environment where the students must learn to be competitive so when they go out in the market, they will definitely make their presence felt."
Dr. Nadeem Syed believes that it is essential to put emphasis on grooming the students through various activities essential to learn and to be successful leaders in the years ahead.
