New horizons in purposeful education

The factors determining ratings of institutions in developed and developing societies focus on the standard of academic programs, teaching faculty, guidance counseling, extramural amenities, infra-structural facilities and a rejuvenating environment towards students' educational, personality and career development in consonance with contemporary demands and in conformity with the developmental perspective. As such, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Government of Sindh have always awarded top category status to the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) which has earned it through a harmonious blend of students' promise and potential, faculty's commitment and excellence, management's planning and innovation, friends' support and inspiration and parents' aspirations and expectations.
The Institute has come a long way since 1995. Students on campus exceed 2500 and is on a large purpose-built campus at Korangi Creek on an 9 acre site. The Business College building with a covered area of 57000 sq.ft. has been equipped with state of the art teaching equipment to enable the Institute to keep pace with the dynamic movement of the global market. All classrooms are equipped with access to the Internet and Intranet. Every faculty member has a separate PC to work on teaching plans and research assignments. A modern Administration and Business Support Centre building, with a covered area of 20,000 sq.ft. is operational and another building with a covered area of 22,000 sq.ft. is home to the College of Computer Science & Information Systems. A Convocation Centre was constructed in October 2002 and a Student Activity Centre was completed in August 2003. A 5- storey Library building operates since January 2005.
IoBM's College of Business Management (CBM) highlights career-focused programs in Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management, Management Information Systems, Health and Media Management. Students strive for BBA, MBA, MHM (Master of Health Management), for BS Joint Honors in Economics/Finance and in Economics/Accountancy by participation, reports, projects, assignments and exams. Faculty is busy preparing notes, delivering lectures, marking assignments, invigilating exams, checking papers, tabulating marks, preparing results and compiling reports. The Academic Coordinator's office is a packed-to-capacity scene emanating bustling academic activity and interaction.
College of Computer Science and Information Systems (CCSIS) links students, faculty and management within themselves and with the corporate world towards career, professional, and business credibility. While Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons.), Master of Computer Science, BS Joint Honors in Financial Mathematics/Statistics and BS in Industrial Engineering and Management are offered. Importance is given to theory, design and application of digital computers, information processing techniques, project-based software development and research to meet productive needs of Pakistan's software industry.
The incorporation of Information Technology is a landmark in curriculum development. Students obtain hands on experience and develop high level expertise in this field. The Information Systems Department (ISD) provides administrative, networking and technical support to faculty and students. The new IT building includes a number of computer laboratories having over 200 work stations and remains fully-equipped with satellite or radio linked e-mail and internet facilities for students, faculty and staff.
Business Support Center (BSC) has programs in banking, finance, information management, accounting, image-building, market studies and strategies, events and publications management, selection and recruitment, project feasibility, rehabilitation and restructuring, environment impact evaluation and social cost benefit, preparation of statements, speeches, papers, annual accounts, press releases and business consultancy services. BSC has a large auditorium with state-of-the-art facilities and networking and professional trainers in accountancy, banking, computers, marketing and Public Relations.
IoBM publishes Pakistan Business Review (PBR), Pakistan's only business research quarterly supervised by an international advisory board of business academics. While CBM faculty members are on PBR's Editorial Board and may contribute to it, this journal comprises views and reviews from business leaders, corporate specialists and men at the helm of public sector. It provides pertinent ideas for overall development of national economy, specially the corporate sector.
Devising enviable and career-focused internships and placement programs, IoBM has gained patronage and support of leading business enterprises. More than 150 students go for compulsory internships every summer to national and multinational organizations.
IoBM experiments in innovation where sky is the limit in career development. There are academic compilations as PR Discovery and Media Plus and inspiring students magazines as YOU 2 and Dimensions. Besides course work students are involved in such absorbing education beyond textbooks that adds to their creative and career excellence through field trips, study tours, debates, quizzes, seminars, lectures and workshops etc.
What is instrumental in the IoBM scheme of things is education beyond text books. Extra-curricular activities through students' societies keep the atmosphere alive and absorbing. There are nine such societies, namely, Marketing, Finance, MIS, HRM, Egalitarians, Sports. Debating, Dramatics, Entertainment and Publications. Here such interesting initiatives are launched that impress, entertain and enthrall students, teachers, parents and management alike.
A state-of-the-art Student Activity Center provides top class dining facilities for 300 students, staff and faculty in a congenial atmosphere. There are ample and elegant indoor facilities like billiards, caroms, chess with well-equipped and modern gymnasium for students and faculty. There are separate lounges for students and faculty, girls common room and a book store. IoBM students shine over the sports horizon. Its cricket, football and table tennis teams have brought home laurels. Outdoor Volleyball and Basketball courts have also been provided.
IoBM library includes large number of books, journals, periodicals and reference material to cater to the needs of students and the faculty. A new, spacious and air-conditioned library building to accommodate 350 students and 100,000 books provides an inspiring reading atmosphere. A regular Press Clippings Service by the Public Affairs Section keeps students and faculty abreast of latest national and international news. IoBM is growing in terms of its expanding academic, research and consultancy programs, in view of its rising number of students, faculty, including highly-qualified foreign faculty and staff and in consideration of its increasing educational, administrative and technical facilities. In order to support IoBM expansion program the International Finance Corporation (IFC) the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, signed an agreement with the Institute of Business Management (IoBM), Karachi for a long term loan of Pak. Rs. 350 million equivalent to about US$.5.9 million, on a 7 years repayment basis.
IFC's financing will enable the Institute to increase its capacity from 3,000 to 5,400 students, including about 800 students in a future elementary, middle, and high school. The funds are being used to acquire 6 acres of land near the existing campus and construct new college buildings, an auditorium, housing for faculty and staff and to extend and improve existing facilities.
What distinguishes IoBM in a highly competitive world of educational fineness is endeavoring to transform lofty ideals into rewarding reality for its promising students, concerned parents, worthy faculty and meticulous management. It conforms with the standard criteria for assessing the credibility of an institution characterized by the quality of education it imparts, by the qualifications, experience and reputation of its faculty and by the facilities and atmosphere the institution provides towards academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular excellence.
