The President Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Mian Shafqat Ali, while talking to the PAGE, said that Lahore could reach the peak in economic terms by paying a little more attention towards law and order and infrastructure development. Though the government of Chief Minister Ch Pervaiz Elahi is doing excellent on a number of fronts, there are still quite a few things which should be tackled on priority basis.
He was of the view that a businessman wants not only his own security but of his investment also and once he is satisfied that his investment is safe he would definitely put up more industrial units. The process of industrialisation on the one hand would not only curtail the existing rate of unemployment but would also bring prosperity in the country.
Mian Shafqat Ali also suggested that there is a need to give urgent attention to the issue of pollution as the city was fast becoming the most polluted cities of the world. He said that there was a time when New Delhi and Bangkok were the most polluted cities but their governments took timely initiatives and now these cities are among the cleaner cities of the world. They just converted their public transport to the CNG and curtailed the level of pollution to a certain extent, while they also gave much needed boost to their economies as the CNG is cheaper than petrol.
Talking about the LCCI's role for promotion of trade and investment in the country, Mian Shafqat Ali said that the Lahore chamber is playing its due role in this regard. Till date a number of foreign dignitaries, including ambassadors and commercial attaches have visited LCCI. He said that the LCCI was trying its level best to facilitate the business community.
The LCCI President said that in the recent past four foreign delegations - Turkish, Chinese, Iranian and Indian - visited Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry and expressed their desire to make investment in Pakistan which is a good omen for the economic well-being of the country.
He said that the Lahore chamber was also doing the needful for producing skilled manpower in the country and in this regard it is motivating the various departments dealing in this particular sector.
Mian Shafqat Ali said that Lahore Chamber of Commerce has become premier chamber of the country as it has not only the biggest number of members but also has an exemplary liaison with all the concerned government departments. He said that the present Chairman of the Central Board of Revenue Abdullah Yousaf is very cooperative with the LCCI.
