INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IS INDISPENSABLE

An exclusive interview with Mr Musharraf Zaman Khan, Executive Director School of Business Studies

Chartered Accountants of Pakistan are considered experts in their field and command repute in the global world. These professionals use information technology to keep themselves abreast with the latest developments taking place in the corporate world across the globe. According to a leading news channel of the UK a couple of years ago, a poll of 1,300 members of Institute of Chartered Accountants in the United Kingdom found they believed the UK lagged behind other countries in the development of entrepreneurs. Better education on enterprise in schools was suggested as well as easier access to finance and cuts in small business taxes. The survey was supported by the Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank.

To find out how Information Technology is being used in Pakistani Accounting and Finance School, PAGE approached Mr Musharraf Zaman Khan, Executive Director School of Business Studies.

PAGE: Has information technology helped School of Business Studies (SBS) grow rapidly in terms of ease of communication?

MUSHARRAF ZAMAN KHAN: It has played a vital role in the growth of SBS. It is now a part and parcel of SBS and we have made the best use of IT. Today SBS is globally known and has become a recognized institution in a very short time. Thanks to Web and Internet.

PAGE: Is there any database maintained for the existing students and the alumni of SBS?

MZK: We have a complete database for all our students including our alumni. We are, however, trying to bring further improvement in our database with the passage of time.

PAGE: How does the use of information technology help the members of the SBS and how do the existing students get benefits by the use of information technology?

MZK: Our fraternity is enjoying countless benefits of IT. The information now available and accessible to every one is unimaginable. 'Net' is being used by Sbsians to download material related to their studies, exchange e-mails, problem solving, time tables, exam registration and results. Parents living abroad stay in touch with the ward's progress through these facilities.

PAGE: What kind of softwares is being used at SBS? Why did you choose such softwares?

MZK: Bill Gates' vision and Microsoft's mission have produced such a good software in the form of Windows which meet our 90% requirements. For our specific needs we use Corel Draw, Page Maker, Photoshop and other specialized softwares. These softwares have made our work easy and lives comfortable.

PAGE: Do you think it is essential for the finance and accounting professionals to use Information Technology?

MZK: Gone are the days of manual accounting. IT is best used by the Finance and Accounting profession and it has helped in the tremendous growth and cultural change of Accounting and Audit Profession. As a result members of our profession are no more back benchers. They are now front line team leaders running the businesses.

PAGE: What kind of services does the SBS provide to the corporate world in terms of IT?

MZK: SBS has imparted training to more than 2000 professionals in the field of IT.

PAGE: Please tell us something about in-house services being used at SBS with the help of information technology?

MZK: Although IT is a part and parcel of every activity at SBS and one distinguishing feature of SBS is computer based examinations for Global Accounting Qualifications like ACCA and CIMA. SBS has the privilege to hold highest number of computer based exams for professional accounting programmes in Karachi.

PAGE: Does Information Technology help you in decision-making?

MZK: The information provided by IT really helps us in better and faster decision making.

PAGE: What courses are IT-specific at SBS? Please tell the names of the courses and their benefits?

MZK: All the professional accountancy programmes include one or two IT related courses. In addition, SBS also holds classes for the students of CISA (Certified Information System Audtiors) under the patronage of ISACA Karachi Chapter.

PAGE: Is information technology being used for front and back office work at SBS?

MZK: Yes, It is a part and parcel of SBS.
