A SIM card or Subscriber Identity Module is a portable memory chip used in some models of cellular telephones. The SIM card makes it easy to switch to a new phone by simply sliding the SIM out of the old phone and into the new one. The SIM stores personal identity information, mobile phone number, phone book, text messages and other data. It can be thought of as a mini hard disk that automatically activates the phone into which it is inserted.

A SIM card is actually a very handy thing, but not a lot of people know about this. For example, if your phone runs out of battery power at a friend's house, you can remove the SIM card from your mobile phone and slide it into your friend's phone to make your call. Your mobile service provider processes the call as if it was made from your phone, so it would not count against your friend's minutes used. If you upgrade your mobile phone there is no hassle involved. The SIM card is all you need. Just slide it into the new phone and you are ready to go. You can even keep multiple mobile phones for different purposes, an inexpensive phone in the glove compartment of your car, for example, for emergency use, one phone for work and another one for home. Just slide your SIM card into whichever phone you wish to use. This way you do not have to carry an expensive phone around.

In case, your mobile phone gets stolen with the SIM in it, you should call your connection provider and put a block on your SIM and get another SIM. You can retain your cell phone number this way.

High-end mobile phones can be very attractive and somewhat pricey. If you invest in an expensive phone you might want to keep it awhile. Using a SIM card, it is even possible to switch the cell phone service provider and continue to use the same phone. The new service provider will simply issue you their own SIM card.

A SIM card provides an even bigger advantage for international travelers, simply take your phone with you and buy a local SIM card with minutes. For example, a traveler from Pakistan staying in the U.K. can purchase a SIM card, which can be used to call throughout England without paying international roaming charges from the carrier back home in Pakistan.

It is the SIM that connects your PDAs and your cell phones to VoIP networks and VoIP call centers.

It is your SIM that tells your mobile service provider that you are calling, when you call them. Soon as you call, your name and your personal data appears on an agents computer screen in their call center due to your SIM and also due to the call center software being used. A company in Karachi is building such call center solutions. These call center solutions have enhanced customer care due to personalized service. Agents answer your call and acknowledge you by your name with you telling them your name at all.

The limited storage capacity of the SIM card had users very frustrated and they have been waiting for this technology to grow faster so that they can enjoy a better multimedia experience. A high density SIM can offer a range of customer benefits like portability, choice, security and personal spontaneity.

Users keep expecting mobile phone companies to deliver better value and quality for a good mobile experience.

The world's first 512 megabyte high-density SIM Card is expected in the world markets in 2006.

Imagine, this SIM card will have 8000 times more memory than the current standard 64 kilobyte SIM cards. Mobile network operators will be able to offer multimedia content services to subscribers via 512 megabyte SIM cards.

The SIM will transform the mobile phone into a true multimedia player. Now you may have a music library containing up to 125 songs, three full-length movies, or 80 Java games in your cell phone. The 512 megabytes capacity will let users store large SMS, MMS and e-mail archives, complete with attachments, in addition to complete PIM and calendar functionality.

The high density SIM card allows subscribers to take their environment and personal settings with them when they upgrade their phone and enables far wider scope for what can be stored on the SIM with its substantially increased capacity.

A modern technological breakthrough enables a current mobile subscriber to plug a SIM USB key into their PC or laptop to place and receive calls from a PC soft-phone using the subscriber's mobile phone number. Bringing together the features of mobile services with the benefits of Internet, VoIP and messaging services, the solution can use virtually and broadband connected PC, while authentication already trusted by GSM operators.

At home, in the office or in an Internet café, end-users can plug the USB SIM key into a broadband connected PC, identify themselves with a secured PIN and be ready to make and receive voice, video or conference calls using their mobile number; check messages, send SMS, MMS, chat; share confidential documents, sign electronic documents, access corporate intranet, etc.

The technology that can convert your mobile phone into a credit card is also the SIM. In Japan, people are paying their train tickets through their mobile phones. FeliCa phones have been working as debit cards in USA. Subscribers buy credits of up to $500 over the Internet or in convenience stores.

Then each time they buy something, the cost, usually no more than a few dollars, is deducted from their balance. If the phone also included a credit card, it could be used to make much larger purchases. If given the facility, people will be incorporating their credit card with their cell phone, for ease of use and convenience.

People can be tracked anywhere if their GPRS on their SIM is activated. In order to track them, a software that has the entire location map computed, along with the identity of the SIM to be tracked is used. This SIM can be implanted in the human body. It can be used in wrist watches or other items of wear for security reasons. Similarly, very dangerous criminals in jails can be monitored by these SIM cards. In case, they escape the law should know where to find them.
