VALUE-ADDED SERVICES DIVISION

The idea of offering Value-Added Services using state-of the-art technology was conceived in 1998. It was anticipated that PTCL will be confronted with numerous challenges after the changed environment resulting from de-regulation of telecom Sector and privatization of PTCL. As a sequel of agreement for purchase of I.N Platform was signed with M/s Alcatel in December, 1998, the Value- Added Services Division (VAS Division) was formulated as an independent profit and loss center. In the PTCL Board of Directors meeting held on March 22, 2000 to meet the dynamics of the market need and for quick commercial decisions, Management Committee was constituted and empowered to take operational, marketing decisions about VAS.

Initially, the I.N Platform acquired had its Central Nodes in Islamabad and Switching Nodes (SSP) were installed in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. The calling card service launched in 2000 became so popular that its capacity exhausted immediately after launch, thus first expansion was carried out in February, 2003. As the trend for using calling card and pre-paid services is getting popularity day-by-day, another high capacity I.N Platform was acquired from M/s Huawei and commissioned in November, 2003.

VALUE-ADDED SERVICES

1. PRE-PAID CALLING CARD SERVICE

This service is being offered through pre-paid calling cards of five convenient denominations of Rs. 100, 250 1000, & 2000. The total turnover of PTCL calling card business was Rs. 2,685 million in the year 2003-2004.

2. TOLL FREE SERVICE (0800)

This is a very popular service for the Corporate Sector and Business Concerns. This is used as Customer Care and Marketing Tool by the companies as the calling party does not have to pay for the call charges but the subscriber of this service bear the call charges on behalf of the caller. The customer availing this service has two attractive tariff options:

(A) 25% discount on PTCL normal NWD tariff. An additional rebate is given to the bills of Rs. 50,000 and more.

(B) Flat rate of Rs. 3/per minute on all NWD calls. At present there are 242 customers of this service who are availing this service on 840 lines.

3. VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK (VPN)

This is also an I.N based service which provides a Virtual Private Network Service to the customer. The service was launched in October, 2002. The user enjoys following benefits:

a) One network for multi-location offices.
b) Abbreviated dialing with in the group.
c) Local as well as nationwide accessibility.
d) It is cost effective 25% discount on NWD calls is given.

Corporate Help-line (0800-81818) is available in VAS to get any information about corporate services during office hours.

Presently we have 77 customers customers availing this service on 1085 telephone lines.

4. TELEPHONE BILL PAYMENT (TBP) SERVICE

In the year 2003-2004 PTCL/VAS offered another valuable service for the customer of PTCL with the brand name "PTCL Fone Bill Cards". It is a very convenient service as customer can clear his/her bill 24 hours and 7 days a week while staying at home and without any hassle of going to some institution for paying his bill.

Initially, the service was launched on February 24, 2004 in twin cities Islamabad & Rawalpindi and it was extended nationwide on March 23, 2004. The phone bill pay cards are available in convenient denominations of Rs. 300, 500, 700 1000 & 2000 catering for the needs of different segments availing the service.

5. PRE-PAID TELEPHONY "AASAN PHONE CONNECTION"

PTCL launched pre-paid Telephony Service with the brand name "PTCL Aasan Pre-paid Phone Connection" in May 2004. This service provides the facility to the subscriber to recharge his telephone account with pre-paid card through his land line telephone. The main objective of the service is to facilitate the customer in getting new connection without any documentation and subsequently to relieve him of bill collection and payment hassle as there will be no billing in this service. The Aasan Cards are available in three affordable denomination of Rs. 500, 1000 and 2000. Up till now 38,000 telephones are working under this scheme.

6. HOME COUNTRY DIRECT (HCD) SERVICE

This service was launched on October 27, 2004 by PTCL, this is a service which allows the customer to make the call from abroad using pre-paid calling card bought in Pakistan with local currency.

Presently this service is available from four countries i.e Iran, Saudi Arabia, USA & UK. Agreements with other countries are under way. The HCD cards with brand name "APNA DES CALLING CARDS" are available in convenient denominations of Rs. 500, 1000, 2000 & Rs. 5000.

7. AUDIO CONFERENCING SERVICE

The Audio Conferencing Service provides Tele-conferencing service to those subscriber groups who use regular telephone facility. The group executive of any company can hold national and international meetings with 29 participants at a time in the conferencing. This service was launched in September 23, 2004.

The service is very economical and useful for the multi-national companies and corporate sectors. Up till now 9 customers have been register for this service and around eleven conferences have been conducted successfully.

8. PREMIUM RATE SERVICE (0900)

This service was launched in May 2001. 14 O&M partner of PTCL, who are holding licence for this service from PTA are availing this service using PTCL infrastructure/I.N Platform. In the year 2003-2004 a total revenue of 415 millions was collected through this service.

9. NEW FORTHCOMING SERVICES TO BE LAUNCHED

Following forthcoming services will be launched by VAS Division shortly:

1) TELEVOTING

This service is also ready for launch. It facilitates the multi nationals or other organizations to ask public opinion about their products. In this service voting can be done in either of the two ways i.e:

i) Customer can give opinion in YES or No
ii) Customer can select one option from a number of multiple choices available.

The capacity of Televoting platform can facilitate 99 companies at a time to conduct their surveys (Opinion polls) etc.

2) UNIVERSAL PERSONAL NUMBER (UPN))

Through this mobility service, one can receive calls on any telephone. A personal number is designated for UPN subscribers.
