Sui Southern Gas Company is an integrated natural gas transmission and distribution company. A phoenix in its own right, the SSGC was born of the embers of three companies. The Sui Gas Transmission Company established in 1954, to construct and operate a pipeline for the transmission of natural gas from Sui to Karachi. The Karachi Gas Company and the Indus Gas Company established in 1955 to build and operate gas distribution systems in Karachi and Interior Sindh. Drawing inspiration from nature and building upon its strengths, the SSGC is poised to progress, and to take the nation towards development and growth in the natural gas sector.

Today, SSGC is seen as a dynamic organization growing in size, steadfast in business principles, resolute in its responsibility to stakeholders and firm in its stand on preserving the environment and conservation of resources. An organization that is a model utility in the true sense of words.

SSGC is a public limited company quoted on the stock exchanges with AA+ credit rating and it is a Blue Chip Company. The company's annual turnover is around Rs.36 billion p.a. with Fixed Assets base of over Rs.35 billion and share holders' equity of nearly Rs.10 billion.

The Company is consistently engaged in planning and executing new projects with the objective of converting the opportunities arising out of the new gas discoveries into real benefits for the Company and its stakeholders.

FROM FAR A FIELD
A SENSE OF ACHIEVEMENT

From a humble beginning in 1954, SSGC has today expanded its system and facilities to serve a large customer base.

The Company's gas supply infrastructure has expanded to 2786 KM of high pressure transmission pipeline, 23,416 KM distribution network and 62,600 horse power gas compression facilities. Currently the pipeline system transmits 1200 million cubic feet of gas daily.

The company is successfully serving the gas requirements of 1,648,874 domestic, 17,429 commercial and over 2,412 industrial customers, who are enjoying the benefits of natural gas, and rely on it as their primary fuel.

PROJECTS AND CONSTRUCTIONS CAPABILITY
PIPELINE SECTION

SSGC is fully capable of handling physical construction of cross country high pressure gas pipelines as well as construction of compressor stations, metering stations preserve regulations and natural gas liquid separation plants. With its trained manpower and fleet of construction machinery and equipment, the pipeline construction department has laid 2,786 KM of high pressure transmission pipelines ranging from 12" to 30" dia during last 29 years in all types of terrain and 23, 416 KM distribution network.

TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEM

With SSGC's vast of gas transmission and distribution network across Sindh and Balochistan, telecommunications plays a vital role in maintaining smooth operations. SSGC has developed a highly advanced state-of-the-art microwave telecommunication system which provides both voice and data communications over the entire system.

SUPERVISORY CONTROL AND DATA ACQUISITION (SCADA)

To ensure optimum gas flows, the transmission pipeline operations are monitored by a modern SCADA System. The company has installed block valves at key pipeline locations to provide for remote actuation through the SCADA System, controlled from the Gas Control Centre at Karachi. In the event of an accident the effected supply line can be isolated and shut off within two minutes to provide maximum security and reliability.

METER MANUFACTURING PLANT

SSGC also owns and operates the only domestic gas meter manufacturing plant in the country, under an agreement with Schlumberger Industries, France, having an annual production capacity of 300,000 meters. This meter plant has Quality Management System in place, which is in accordance with ISO 9000-2000 standard.

HUMAN RESOURCES

GAS TRAINING INSTITUTE (GTI)
EMPOWERING SSGC EMPLOYEES

The high standards of excellence set-up by SSGC demand training to enable SSGC employees to face challenges with a renewed vigour and confidence in their abilities. The Gas Training Institute (GTI) was established in 2002. Be it basic tasks or complex issues, GTI has taken the lead in providing quality training to SSGC employees.

The GTI has in a short span of time, conducted courses on different topics, and imparted training to more than 1000 executives and staff with remarkable success.

CUSTOMER CARE

SSGC is always abreast with the needs and requirements of its customers, providing high level of service that is unsurpassed in convenience and quality standards. The billing system is extended for online billing enquiry for attending to customer queries. Facilitation centers at the billing offices are connected with online billing enquiries with the growth in number of customers. The billing set-up is administratively and functionally regionalized/zonalized and is under constant review for its effectiveness; these initiatives further strengthen SSGC's resolve to be a customer friendly organization.

CONVENIENT BILL PAYMENT FACILITIES

SSGC is continuously exploring avenues for simplifying the bill payment process and providing alternatives by introducing various plans designed to facilitate customers in the payment of their bills.

COMPUTERIZED METER READING

The company use Hand Held Computers to record meter readings. This eliminates chances of manipulation, and saves valuable time while minimizing data processing errors. SSGC is the first public utility to introduce hand held computers for this purpose.

SSGC is committed to providing quality service to its customers. The SSGC call service teams consisting of professionally trained personnel, with modern equipment, provide prompt response to all emergency situations on 24 hours non-stop basis.

SWIFT NEW GAS CONNECTIONS

SSGC is keen on providing customers swift access to all services. Keeping in view the need of customers, SSGC now provides approval of new gas connections within 07 days only.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

Our high regard towards social responsibility at SSGC also entails finding environmental protection solutions to ensuring the health and safety of all concerned as we continue our journey forward. Through the activities of the Health, Safety and Environment Department at SSGC, continuous improvements are made in the company's operational performance to avoid any and all work related to health hazards and accidents. In addition, keeping environmental emission, wastage and use of energy under check. As a responsible corporate citizen, SSGC also runs public service campaigns highlighting the prudent and safe use of natural gas.

On the environmental front, our on-going programmes include provision of natural gas to the Juniper Tree region in Ziarat at Balochistan to help prevent deforestation of the rare forest species. SSGC is also supporting WWF Wetland center for the preservation of the endangered mangrove forests near Sandspit, bringing natural gas in the nearby villages as a replacement fuel for firewood and timber.

PROMOTION USE OF CNG

SSGC also provides gas connections to CNG stations in entire southern region of Pakistan. Offering this cleanest and non-pollutant source of fuel makes SSGC a natural partner in the global quest for a cleaner environment.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE CENTERS

Fully equipped to deal with emergency situations, emergency cutoff of gas in pipeline rupture, fires or accidents, SSGC has established six Emergency Response Centers at various locations which include Karachi, Quetta Terminals, Shikarpur, Nawabshah, Dadu, and Sibi head quarters.

ISGSL INTER STATE GAS SYSTEMS LIMITED

SSGC joined hands with Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited forming the Inter State Gas Systems as a joint venture company; While Pakistan is well supplied with natural gas, it may require importing more gas to keep up with growing demand. ISGSL has developed long-term natural gas demand/supply projections. ISGSL is dedicated to facilitating the development of gas import projects and exploring overseas business opportunities in the gas sector. ISGSL is involved in three major inter state gas pipeline projects Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan, Qatar-Pakistan and Iran-Pakistan pipeline projects. Through these multilateral ventures, the activities of ISGSL will ensure the continued future availability of natural gas, keeping in view of the region's long-term energy needs.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The information technology department provides support for the implementation of the overall business strategies. The IT department is engaged in:

Implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning Software (ERP):

Enterprises Resource Planning Soft-ware (ERP), attempts to integrate all departments and functions across the company on to a single computer system that can serve the particular needs of different departments.

Integrated information sharing system for providing timely and accurate information for planning and decision making process.

Evaluate and introduce new and evolving technical solutions in software and hardware.

To facilitate the development and induction of information technology and to become a most IT enabled company, SSGC has signed a comprehensive Enterprise Agreement and an Investment Pact with Microsoft. This agreement makes SSGC the first ever public sector utility company to enter such an alliance.

A major project undertaken by this department is the Geographic Information System (GIS). It is a computer-based system capable of displaying geographically referenced information and data identification of the location of SSGC pipeline system. The first of its kind in Pakistan, the GIS-based pipeline information system shall expedite response in any emergency situations.
