Hewlett-Packard and Unisys Pakistan join hands
Attractive growth rate of Pakistan IT sector attracting world IT leaders

Hewlett-Packard (HP) of Singapore has appointed Unisys Pakistan as their Corporate Reseller in Pakistan. A formal agreement was signed at a simple but impressive ceremony at Sheraton on Feb.16, 2000. Ashraf Jafri, country General Manager Unisys Pakistan, Colin Chow, general manager HP, Derek Seow, Sales Director and Peter Quek HP's country manager in Pakistan were present on the occasion.
Leaders of the two sides were of the unanimous opinion that Pakistan has the highest growth rate of 18-20 per cent in the IT sector which certainly offers attractive investment opportunities for the IT leaders. They said that HP-Unisys working together in Pakistan have shown satisfactory results by capturing a respectable size of the corporate market. Both HP and Unisys appreciated the growth rate in Pakistan and observed that HP's strategy will be to grow faster than the market growth in Pakistan.
Ashraf Jafri, Country General Manager Unisys Pakistan, speaking on the occasion, described the signing ceremony as the landmark in the IT history of Pakistan. He said that HP and Unisys, two leaders of the Information Technology coming together to provide corporate customers in Pakistan with the most comprehensive range of solutions, backed up by proven Unisys customer service.
Unisys and HP have been working together in Pakistan for about two and a half years and over a period of time have developed a close working relationship for the benefit of the valued customers. HP's range of computing products is well known and need no introduction. HP is a world leader in the field of PCs, notebooks, and servers, imaging solutions and networked printers.

Today Unisys is supporting nearly 400 bank branches installations in more than 30 cities throughout the country. All three stock exchanges of Pakistan, all the leading ISP's, five Companies in the energy/ petroleum sector, the leading automobile manufacturer in Pakistan and a number of other major clients in the corporate sector.
Currently, Unisys aims to focus the Customer Service. Jafri said that Unisys takes care of the customers and always looking at ways for improvement to provide better service with each passing day. The feedback is however imperative especially the critical one, which gives the guideline to better the best, Jafri, observed. As a part of this programme, the company is investing in a big way in the training of the technical personnel. Currently two of the engineers are in London undergoing training on the new Unisys Intel mainframe ES7000 system plus Windows Data-center 2000 Operating System. Towards the end of the month another engineer will be proceeding to Dubai for similar training.
Ashraf Jafri said that by virtue of direct partnership with HP Asia Pacific, Unisys intends to provide the most comprehensive range of solutions and services in the industry. Besides supplying the HP hardware, Unisys has recently added to its portfolio the world leading network management solution, HP Open View.
With a team of engineers well versed in Unix, NT/ Windows 2000 and now Data-center 2000 as well as Cisco Internetworking, Unisys is in an excellent position to help the customers to exploit the features of Open View to manage their increasingly complex networks in a more efficient and cost effective manner.
Jafri said with a sense of achievement that some of the largest organizations including UBL, Allied Bank, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, Habib Bank, Attock Refinery Ltd, International Brands Ltd, NIFT, Shell Pakistan, State Bank of Pakistan, Supreme Court of Pakistan and UNICEF are using HP products and solutions acquired from Unisys.
Addressing the audience, Colin Chow said that HP's partnership with Unisys in Pakistan is very significant in that the combine strengths will be able to serve many m mission critical customers nationwide. In fact, Unisys has support installations in more than 25 cities. "Our total solution offerings, from PCs to Unix , from services to solutions, from digital imaging solutions to networked printers will be so pervasive that HP will be present in every office and home," he observed.
Replying to a question regarding government's intention to import used computers from the United States, they feel that the deal could be beneficial to the government policy for the benefit of the people at the grass root level, however, it is better to ensure backup support and after sale service before entering into the deal for buying the used computers, they suggested.
Though the Unisys is marketing for HP products, yet reaching the individual customers was not the target of the HP-Unisys in Pakistan. However it may help at the grass root level if the deal helps acquiring better quality PCs at the reasonable price.
