Updated Dec 24, 2005

COMMENTS: The rupee showed a remarkable recovery against dollar in the open market dealings this week and significant gains in its price were recorded at close on Saturday. Dollar started new week at Rs. 60/17 but slow demand from the customers, steady trend of dollar in the international market and its falls in the inter bank supported the national currency and dollar finally was changing hands at Rs. 59.90 at close of markets. on the other hand, since supply was equally sufficient with the vendors therefore, rupee's gains were in full swing.

COMMENTS: Sterling stood as one of the major losers this week and rupee was able to show smart recovery against the currency which was totally opposite to what was seen the previous week. Sterling started new week at Rs. 105/75 and was changing hands at Rs. 103/40 on Saturday. Rupee therefore was able to recover Rs. 2/35 with chances of more recovery in the coming sessions. On world desks actually, sterling remained under pressure against major currencies.

COMMENTS: This week, euro fell against rupee amid its downward performance against major currencies especially against greenback in the international market. Euro started new week at Rs. 72/00 but at close of markets on Saturday, was changing hands at Rs. 70/80. On the international desks, euro was little changed at $1.1818 <EUR=> on Thursday. It had slipped 0.3 percent the previous day, helping to lift the dollar versus the yen. In weekend trading however, euro traded flat at $1.1864 and was down 0.4 percent against the yen at 137.89 yen.

COMMENTS: Contrary to its rising trend last week. Yen slipped against rupee and ended week on a negative note. Through out this week, rupee was seen recovering grounds against the currency. In world market, since hitting a seven-week low on Monday, the dollar climbed around 2 yen, helped by a view that investors have finished unwinding positions after the U.S. currency posted its steepest weekly decline in six years last week.
