Updated Dec 17, 2005

COMMENTS: The dollar posed a rising trend in the open market this week and a five paisa gain was recorded in its price at close of markets on Saturday. Dollar started new week at Rs. 60/10 but was changing hands at Rs. 60/15 on Saturday. Although demand from buyers was not very high and supply was fair too, but due to dollar's rise in the inter bank market was one of major reasons of rupee's mild fall.

COMMENTS: Sterling was also able to further strengthen its position against rupee this week and more gains in its price were recorded. The currency started new week at Rs. 105/60 and by taking cues from its international market gains, was standing at Rs.106/20 on Saturday. The currency came up against greenback this week in major world markets especially because currency investors started to lock in year-end profits and position themselves for 2006.

COMMENTS: Yen unlike all major currencies remained among the gainers and ended week on a positive note. Yen strength remained a weight on the greenback as broad bets against the Japanese currency continued to unwind even after a report showed a narrower-than-expected U.S. current account deficit for the third quarter.
