The President, Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Mian Misbahur Rehman, looks forward to the coming visit of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on May 17 as one of the major initiatives taken by the Chamber. In a chat with Pakistan & Gulf Economist, he dilated on the key decision.

In fact, the initiative taken by the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the reckoning of the efforts of the trade and industry at the national scale for the first time in economic history of Lahore.

The decision to give Best Achievement Awards to the businessmen of this City of Lahore would go a long way as on one hand it would promote the business activities in the country while on the other, the business community of the city would get recognition for their performance.

The Awards ceremony would be held on May 17 and would be chaired by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shaukat Aziz while it would be attended by the Chief Minister Ch. Pervaiz Elahi, Governor Khalid Maqbool, federal ministers and the top bureaucrats besides the business elite of the capital of the province.

The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) had always tried to supplement efforts of the economic managers for bringing economic stability in the country. The Best Achievement Awards would further the cause.

The FPCCI is doing the same job but actually it is being done only in a particular sector (exports) and hence there is no recognition of rest of the business community at all. In fact, Lahore, which is generally called the heart of Pakistan strongly supported by growing economic zones around the city emerging fast on a wider canvas of the national economy.

The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry has decided to give as many 30 awards in various categories to induce a sense amongst them to be a part of the economy.

The function would be unique in the sense that for the first time in the history of the Lahore Chamber such awards will be given to the leading businessmen of Lahore. These Awards are recognition of the efforts of the business community of Lahore, which due to their efforts, has become hub of business activity.

The decision to give awards to the Lahore businessmen was taken by LCCI President Mian Misbahur Rehman, Senior Vice President Sohail Lashari, Vice President Sheikh Mohammad Arshad and Executive Committee members in the larger interest of trade and business.

Three categories of awards i.e. Prime Minister of Pakistan Trophy, Businessman of the Year Gold Medal and Best Lady Exporter Award would be given to the top businessmen of the city.

To encourage women entrepreneurs the LCCI has also decided to present award to the company with a women Chief Executive/Proprietor/Partner and carry the distinction of achieving the highest turnover in Industry/Investment/Export/ Trade/Welfare and Value-added items.

Supported by the most modernized aviation facility at the newly developed Lahore Airport and production of quality export surplus ranging from textiles, sports, a variety of engineering goods, Lahore has started attracting direct investment. As a result of growing economic activity, the earlier trend of labor influx from Punjab towards industrial city of Karachi is being phased out gradually. In fact providing job to the people at their door step is again a highly commendable contribution by trade and industry in Lahore by defusing the mounting population pressure in Karachi.

Comparatively better law and order situation, social harmony and availability of raw material and above all the willingness of the people to work hard are some of the factors altogether lend a strong helping hand to place Lahore prominently on the economic map of Pakistan.
