LG ELECTRONICS AND MICROSOFT

LG Electronics, Inc. announced the world's first DVD recorder with digital video recorder (DVR) functionality using new software technology from Microsoft Corp. LG model LRM-519 will be available to consumers by fall of 2005.

Unveiled by Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates during his keynote address at the International CES 2005, the LG model LRM-519 raises the bar in the exploding DVD Recorder market as the first combination DVD recorder and 160-gigabyte hard-disc-drive (HDD) convergence product with an electronic program guide (EPG) and PC connectivity using technology from Microsoft.

"As the 'digital convergence' concept becomes more commonplace, the powerful combination of Microsoft and LG technology will redefine recordable media for home entertainment," said Dr. Hee-Gook Lee, chief technology officer, LG Electronics. "With support for wired or wireless in-home networking and innovative PC connectivity, the LG LRM-519 is a true digital convergence product."

STATE LIFE'S HISTORIC NEW BUSINESS OF RS. 2.20 BILLION IN 2004

State Life Insurance Corporation of Pakistan has successfully secured a historic New Business (First Year Premium) of Rs. 2.20 billion as individual life which is 104% of the actual target of Rs. 2.12 billion while insuring more than two lac new policyholders and their families nationwide during the year 2004. according to the press release issued recently by the PR Department of State Life.

Addressing the Senior Corporate and Marketing Executives on the occasion of cake cutting ceremony to celebrate the achievement, Kamal Afsar, Chairman State Life congratulated Zafar Mehmood, Executive Director (Marketing), Corporate and Marketing Executives of State Life for their tireless efforts in securing the historic New Business of Rs 2.20 billion in 2004. Zafar Mehmood, Zahid Murad and Rahat-ul-Ain Executive Director State Life were present on the occasion.

Kamal Afsar, hoped that State Life will continue to provide financial protection to its millions of valued policyholders both in individual and group life by expanding the marketing operations and introducing quality products, plans and life assurance policies in 2005.

Zafar Mehmood, Executive Director (Marketing) while highlighting the performance of marketing portfolio informed that the year 2004 was the 'Record Breaking' year in the annals of State Life. He said that State Life's Group Life Business has reached Rs. 2.41 billion mark while the international business stood at US$2.37 million, showing and increase of 8.68% and 13% respectively. The Executive Director believed that the new business targets for 2005 will be completed during the fourth quarters in 2005 by strategic planning and execution.

M. Jawaid Khan, General Manager (Marketing) State Life presented the performance of Regions and Zones of State Life in 2004 and said that business-wise Central Region is on the top list followed by North, Southern and Multan regions.

EXPERTS STRESS THE NEED FOR CREATING AWARENESS IN HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

A seminar was organized by the Human Resource Society at University of Karachi on 'Expectations from university graduates employers' vision,' in October last year.

Ms. Saba Masood (President of Human Resource Society, Lecturer Department of Economics), Akram Durrani (Director, HRD, State Bank of Pakistan), Zahid R. Khawaja (Economist, CEO FinanSys), Khan Kashif Ejaz (Recruitment Head, HBL) addressed the seminar.

 

 

Chief Organizer and President of the Human Resource Society, Saba Masood said that in rapidly changing world it is imperative to be aware of that the purpose of this society is to create much needed awareness of acquiring the practical skills and knowledge, beside the bookish theories.

She said that by organizing this seminar we have initiated the process of bringing the awareness on challenges ahead and the attributes and skills that employers expect from the university graduates.

Speaking as chief guest, the Director Human Resource State Bank of Pakistan, Akram Durrani said the employers now hire people based on their abilities and train and groom them with the needed skills while at work.

He further said that educational level, academic excellence is very important, however, employers must show interest that how these factors can contribute towards achieving the required results.

Zahid Khawaja, training expert, said that loyalty, integrity, hard working and initiative talking abilities are basic expectations that employers seek in the new entrants.

Head of Recruitment, Habib Bank of Pakistan, Kashif Ejaz emphasized the need of developing the inter-personal skills, analytical and conceptual thinking, application of knowledge, communication skills and team work abilities.

Speaking on the occasion, the Dean Faculty of Arts Professors, Dr. Shamsuddin said according to a recent survey of the Higher Education Commission there are less than one hundred thousand enrolments at all 96 public and private sector universities and degree awarding institutions throughout the country at various degree disciplines.

KASHMIR OPTIONS

Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas, Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat has said that time has come for both India and Pakistan to quit the path of war and divert all its resource towards the social and economic welfare of their people.

He said this while addressing a distinguished gathering of intellectuals; educationists, diplomats and political analysts participating in a dialogue on 'Kashmir Options' organized by Preston University at its campus in Islamabad.

Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat further said that the confidence building measures lately taken by both the countries has created grounds for dealing with all issues including the core issue of Kashmir. He expressed the confidence that the process of negotiations undertaken by both the governments will ultimately lead to the resolution of the long-pending Kashmir issue. He said that the people of Kashmir should be a part of the negotiations being held between India and Pakistan.

Earlier, Dr. Abdul Basit, Chancellor Preston University extended a very warm welcome to Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat, Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas for accepting Preston's invitation to grace the seminar on Kashmir as the Chief Guest. He also extended his gratitude to the keynote speakers former Ambassadors Dr. Maqbool A. Bhatti and Tayyab Siddiqui for making enlightening and thought provoking presentations on the burning issue of Kashmir.
