Mobile zone, the largest mobile phone company in Pakistan has been awarded the best growing partner for Nokia 2004. Mobile zone is the first Pakistani company to receive such a prestigious award which covers the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
In a star-studded event in one of the most prestigious resorts in Dubai, Mobile zone was acknowledged as the leading Nokia distributor in Pakistan.

Pakistan has witnessed tremendous growth in the last three years and has been acknowledged as the single largest market having the greatest potential for growth in 2005. Pakistan's existing subscriber base of around 5.5 million is expected to swell to over 12 million next year.

The Government of Pakistan has done a tremendous job in promoting the telecom sector resulting in unprecedented growth in the local market. The government, however, must also encourage and facilitate phone manufacturers to setup assembly plants in Pakistan which will not only reduce the price to local consumer's, but will also allow transfer of technology and create much needed jobs within Pakistan.

Mobile zone is recently brought together market leaders Nokia and Mobilink for Pakistan's most successful handset bundling promotion which was well appreciated by the Pakistani consumers. Mobile zone and its partners made it possible to buy a brand new Nokia phone, with a Jazz connection and a Rs 300 scratchcard for only Rs 4,500 all inclusive.

Mobile zone is currently the market leader employing over two hundred and fifty qualified staff for selling Nokia phones from over two thousand retail stores across Pakistan. Mobile zone has invested heavily in dedicated Nokia authorized service centers in all the major cities. These state of the art centers ensure that Pakistani users get the same standard of quality product and service which is seen in Europe.

Mobile zone is also the first company to setup 'state of the art' sales and service centers in Kabul, making MZ the market leader in Afghanistan.


Sindh Minister for Food and Agriculture Arif Mustifa Jatoi said recently that the government has prepared a five-point plan to make the country self-sufficient in food and improve the agriculture sector.

He was speaking as chief guest at a seminar on World Food Day, "Accessing Quality Food for Everyone", organised by National Forum for Environment and Health at a local hotel.

Jatoi said that the government is tackling five main issues simultaneously to improve availability of the irrigation water and increase yield of agriculture products. The seed varieties of the most of cotton and rices have now become older and the government is trying to evolve new varieties for increased products. "We will introduce new high-yield varieties in the country," he added.

Under a national programme, the government will work on lining of the water courses to save water losses. Under this four-year programme, the government is expected to save 30% of the irrigation water losses, he added.

The provincial minister said that a project to rehabilitate Sukkur Barrage has been prepared. The government is also making efforts to increase the wheat yield. He hoped that the country would not only be self-sufficient in wheat but would be able to export it. He said the world population is growing at the rate of 30%, but Pakistan's population is increasing by 100%, which would certainly create shortage of food.


The company spokesman is pleased to advise that Unit 4 has now been repaired, is functional and is back in operation. With this, three Units of 300 Megawatt each, a total of 900 Megawatt are now fully available for dispatch by Wapda. Given below is an updated status report on all our four Units.

Unit No.1 remains on scheduled outage and all necessary steps have been taken to procure the replacements for the damaged blades. Further progress on this Unit will be advised in due course.

Unit No. 2 is fully operational, available for dispatch.

Unit No. 3 is fully operational, available for dispatch.

Unit No. 4 is fully operational, available for dispatch.

On World Sight Day standard Chartered Bank, in partnership with Sight Savers International and other charitable organisations, will launch the next phase of its Seeing is Believing campaign.

This groundbreaking programme aims to restore sight to one million people. It will set in place an infrastructure that will transform lives for years to come. Blindness is a major economic and social problem in parts of the developing world where Standard Chartered has been present for over 150 years.

As part of this programme, 12 projects across 10 flagship countries have been identified for support. In Pakistan projects related to Layton Rehmatullah Benevolent Trust, namely the Korangi Base Eye Hospital in Karachi and Eye and Cancer Base Hospital in Lahore, have been selected. As a result of this commitment 54,000 people will receive sight-restoring operations and another 325,000 people will receive medical treatment and/or other types of surgical operation.


The Boeing Company has announced its Quality Management System award for two new suppliers in Pakistan, Precision Engineering Complex (PEC) and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC). The two companies have achieved a quality rating from Boeing, clearing the way for them to begin producing parts for the company's airplane programs .

The quality rating, called Boeing Quality Management System (BQMS), is a standard that includes a set of internationally approved quality aerospace requirements. BQMS ensures that all elements of design, production and support throughout the Boeing supply chain operate at levels of quality and performance to provide the highest product safety and reliability


Global and regional digital leader LG Electronics unveiled a technological breakthrough, the result of a US$5 million investment in research and development.

The LG Primian refrigerator is specially designed to keep dates fresh and tasty, and to preserve the taste of other foods at optimal levels. Leading Saudi dates producer Bateel has already endorsed the novel fridge product.

LG is the first consumer electronics company to offer a convenient home appliance to store dates for up to six months at minus 25 degrees Centigrade. LG's Primian fridge also uses state-of-the-art soft freezing technology that can store food at minus seven degrees Centigrade, preserving meat and fish items for up to 20 days.
