On 1st November 2002 Shaukat Aziz, Federal Minister for Finance & Economic Affairs inaugurated akdtrade.com, the first online trading facility of Pakistan. The first landmark was the establishment of the facility, integrating information technology and the capital market. In the short span, the second landmark has been achieved. The total worth of shares traded online crossed the Rs 100 billion mark in March 2004. The biggest achievement is that akdtrade has radically changed the way investors, particularly the smaller ones, think about stock trading.

At the launching of akdtrade, Ali Ansari, the Chief Executive Officer of the company had said, "With the launch of akdtrade, we will be providing all investors with a level service, which was only available to a few privileged". The handling of more than 10,000 customer trades per day by the akdtrade shows that small investors have not only learnt to make their own decisions but also to execute them with the help of state-of-the-art technology.

On the historic moment of achieving Rs 100 billion mark, Ali Ansari, said, "The quantum of online trading is the evidence of the convenience online trading system offers to the investors and the trust they place in our ability to help them in fulfilling their investment needs in an efficient and timely manner".

Online stock trading has become very popular and most coveted activity around the globe. The deployment of modern technology in Pakistan takes one directly to the stock exchange, thus making trade and investment decisions easier than ever. Yet another beauty of the infrastructure is that the cost per transaction is also very low.

The ground-breaking innovation, akdtrade, offers investors quick and convenient access to the Karachi Stock Exchange, using their own personal computer. It makes sock trading a viable option for people who would otherwise not be able to deal with the hassles of trading at the stock exchange.

Designed for convenience and ease of understanding, akdtrade also provides in-depth market analysis and information that actually guide the investor towards making sound investment decisions. It also offers the advantage of real time transactions, with small transactions also getting executed instantly.

Along with the website, akdtrade provides its customers a number of innovative tools to help them stay in touch with the stock market and keep control over their portfolio. These include Pocket Stocks, a cellular phone-based application that provides live stock market quotes to Ufone subscribers. A round-the-clock call centre with IVR has also been launched to handle customer inquiries at any time. However in all these areas, confidentiality and security of customer account details have been the primary consideration. Customer trust is another reason why akdtrade has the largest retail customer base in the country today.

The akdtrade is a showcase of Pakistani technology. Virtual Trade Automated Management System (VTAMS) is a web-based automated ordering system that delivers a high degree of control and robust scalable solutions. Application XS, the company that has developed the software, has been given Excellence Award by NCR Pakistan.

The akdtrade is a division of Aqeel Karim Dhedhi Securities (AKD Securities), a corporate member of Karachi Stock Exchange. AKD Securities is the innovator in the capital markets. The leading brokerage house has assembled a core team of expert professionals with a high level of integrity, financial acumen and industry experience. It has not only initiated online trading but also established venture capital, concluded the first ever securitization, the largest TFC issue and the biggest merger and acquisition transaction in the history of Pakistan.
