PAKISTAN DAY

Nation celebrated the historic occasion of Pakistan day with the hope that the peace and prosperity would also return to this part of the world after amicable solution of issues including Kashmir issue between India and Pakistan. The two countries would divert their resources to improve the lot of the poverty ridden people on both sides of the border. Dr. Ishrat Hussain, Governor State Bank of Pakistan identifies long term investment in infrastructure development as a part of the poverty alleviation program of the government. He however calls not only for strong political support by legal cover to make this program a success.

 

 

 

WATER
The low water level at Tarbela has not only resulted in drastic reduction in its power generation but also hints at water shortage across the country both for agriculture and drinking. Protest rallies have already been reported in Hyderabad from residents against the shortage of water. It has compelled the officials of the irrigation department of the Hala Division to announce water rotation programme due to water shortage at River Indus and the Rohri Canal.

SPLITTING PTCL
Lately there has been a major shift in the GoP policy regarding privatization of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL). It is believed that now the GoP is considering splitting the PTCL into a number of smaller entities for soliciting better offer. However, many sector analysts believe that restructuring will delay the privatization of the company for two years, at least.
