The second edition of Pakistan Export & Investment Guide, published by Pak International Publisher, Karachi in collaboration with Export Promotion Bureau is worth calling a reference document on Pakistan. The first edition published in year 2000 got overwhelming response from the readers both at home and abroad. Certain useful suggestions were received, which prompted the publishers to come up with revised and enlarged second edition.

Some of the critics may say that a lot of information given in the Guide is freely available. However, They tend to forget that getting all the information with updates, given in the Guide, is not an easy job. For this the person may have to approach various government departments and/or visit a large number of websites, which is not an easy task. The publisher has put together a lot of information in one book and the cost is also affordable.

The first section spread over 279 pages provides expensive details about Pakistan. It also deals with export documentation and rebates. It provides useful information about exchange control regulations. The second chapter provides a comprehensive overview of Pakistan's Trade Policy. The third section briefly discusses World Trade Organization, use of Internet, e-commerce and quality certification programmes.

The fourth section on foreign trade statistics of Pakistan provides comprehensive data on Pakistan's exports, average unit price, exports by economic categories, export of top 20 products from Pakistan, region wise exports and Pakistan's trade with regional economic groups. The fifth section comprise of important SROs, Notifications and Circulars. Some of the important Notifications are regarding, Exports Quality Control, Import and Export of Gold, Jewellery, Gemstones.

The sixth section is very important both for the beginners as well as the seasoned ones. This provides specimens of different Forms and other documents. The seventh section contains list of various ministries, Pakistan Trade Offices abroad, list of various chambers of commerce & industry of Pakistan and exhibitions programme of Export Promotion Bureau.

Part II of the Guide deals with Investment Policy of Government of Pakistan, Immigration Procedure and Laws regarding incorporating companies in the country. It also provides comprehensive details about physical and social infrastructure. To make the job of a prospective investor further easy, the Guide also highlights some of the important sectoral policies. This is important because now investors are keen in knowing sector specific policies.

Providing information is not considered a norm in the developing countries. The Publisher broke this taboo and the efforts were recognized. The level of appreciation of the Guide by the business community is evident from the number of advertisements printed in the guide. Some of the government offices also extended a helping hand by not only providing the latest information but also extending advertising support.

The GoP is pursuing policies to broaden manufacturing base and widen the list of exports. To achieve the targets an important consideration is availability of vital information influencing decision making. The Guide provides extensive information and the only draw back is that it is not available on a dedicated website. The Publisher must create a website of its own at the earliest.
