EXCHANGE OF TEACHERS AND STUDENTS BETWEEN SAARC

Mr. Zubair Ahmed Malik, President of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI) has stressed the need for exchange of teachers and students between SAARC countries to promote inter-country awareness and knowledge for the advancement of education. This should be facilitated through the liberal grant of visas on a first-come-first serve basis.Mr. Malik pointed out that the 21st Century focus on technology based skills and education can revolutionize the economies of the seven member countries in the SAARC region. This would complement SAFTA agreement which provides for trade liberalization for mutual benefit.

Literacy rates in several countries of SAARC are very low. For example, Pakistan is at 6th level in literacy among SAARC countries, Nepal's literacy rate is at 51 percent, Bhutan at 54 percent and Bangladesh at 65 percent. Mr. Malik pointed out that although each of the SAARC countries are making efforts to increase literacy, there is need for close collaboration between them to learn and profit from the effectiveness of methodologies being pursued by each country to overcome the curse of illiteracy.
