Engro Chemical Pakistan Limited a leading fertilizer company of Pakistan with joint ventures in other chemical related businesses, has acquired controlling interest in the Automation and Control division of Innovative (Private) Limited, a Lahore-based company. The new company will offer automation and control solutions in energy management, plant optimization and process data integration to a wide range of leading companies in Pakistan. 



The new company combines Engro's process engineering and plant operations strength with the Automation and Control knowledge of Innovative. The acquisition is part of Engro's drive to strategically diversify its business portfolio. The new company will be called Innovative Automation and Engineering (Private) Limited. It will be headquartered in Lahore. The company will market variety of services in automation and control to industries in Pakistan and also export it's services to the Middle East markets. The company plans to invest in a state of the art engineering and testing facility in Pakistan to support its growth initiatives.

The newly constituted Board of Directors of the Company elected Mr. Khalid S. Subhani of Engro as the Chairman and nominated Mr. Bakhtiar H. Wain of Innovative as the Chief Executive Officer. The acquisition represents a serious desire on the part of Engro to participate in the emerging knowledge based businesses offering high quality services.


Colgate-Palmolive (Pakistan) Ltd is introducing a breakthrough technology in dental care, Colgate Total Fresh Stripe, the only toothpaste in the world that gives clinically proven germ protection for 12 hours, even after eating and drinking, this was stated by Dr. Safdar Ali, Head of Research and Development, Colgate Pakistan.

Prof. Dr. Khawaja Amjad Saeed, Pro Vice-Chancellor (1994-96) and Founder, Director, Institute of Business Administration (1973-96), University of the Punjab, Lahore was honored for his services to the noble cause of contributing to management education in South Asia. The honor was conferred by the Association of Management Development Institutions of South Asia (AMDISA), Consortium of business schools and management development institutions of South Asia. AMDISA is a recognized Apex body by SAARC.

Prof. Khawaja served AMDISA, Consortium of SAARC Business Schools, as President during 1993-96, contributed several articles at home and abroad, authored 30 books and has served the cause of preparing youth for the challenges of 21st century.



He served as Dean: Executive Programs at the Central University of Punjab and is at present a visiting professor at the Swinburn University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia and in several Universities in SAARC countries.

He was given a plaque in Bandos Island on April 15, 2002 by AMDISA through the honorable Minister of Trade and Industry of the Government of Republic of Maldives on April 15, 2002, testifying recognition of his services to management education.

Prof. Khawaja also presented a paper on "Finance, Banking and Governance" and also chaired a session in 7th South Asian Management Forum on the theme of Economic Renaissance of SAARC held in Maldives during April 15-17, 2002.

Currently he is serving as Principal, Hailey College of Banking and Finance, a Constituent College of the University of Punjab, Lahore.


Singer Pakistan Limited is the first company in Pakistan to manufacture refrigerators with "Green Gas" technology.

R-134a gas-commonly known as "Green Gas" is environment-friendly and is the preferred medium for producing cooling in refrigerators.

This was announced at a press conference by Singer Pakistan Limited, at the launch of their "new environment-friendly refrigerators" Made in Pakistan.

Speaking on the occasion, The Director Marketing, Singer Pakistan Limited said, "Refrigerators manufactured in Pakistan generally use Freon Gas (R-12) as a refrigerant. This gas is not only becoming scarce and expensive but is also harmful for the environment. The production and usage of this gas in developed countries has been discontinued".

"Freon Gas refrigerator would become obsolete in future, and their compressors would not operate on Green Gas", he added.

Production of Freon-12 has been phased out in the developed world and refrigerant R134a (Green Gas) was developed as a commercially available alternative.

The Governor Balochistan, Lt. General (R) Mr. Abdul Qadir Baloch, Senator Mr. Haji Wali Badani and Minister for Sports and Culture Govt. of Balochistan Lt. Col. (R) Mr. Changazi, paid a visit to the campus of BIZTEK Institute of Business and Technology on April 30, 2003.

Sui Southern Gas Company Ltd (SSGC) and Microsoft signed a comprehensive Enterprise Agreement and an Investment Pact. This agreement makes SSGC the first ever Public Sector Utility Company in Pakistan to enter into such an alliance.

The ceremony took place at SSGC head office, May 08, 2003. This initiative shall help build a strategic relationship between the largest software company of the world and the well-known progressive public sector utility company of Pakistan. This partnership will facilitate the SSGC to use the latest technologies of Microsoft to bring required efficiencies internally and responsiveness to its customers at large.



The signing-in took place between Mr. Munawar B. Ahmad, Managing Director, SSGC and. Jawwad Rehman, Country Manager, Microsoft Pakistan. The proceedings were carried out in the presence of Sindh Minister of Information Technology Mr. Yagoob Ilyas James, Mr. Abdul Ghaffar, Chairman & CE, Computer Society of Pakistan, Mr. Khawaja Samiullah Askari, President Computer Society of Pakistan (Karachi Chapter), and Mr. Asim Haque, Enterprise Account Manager, Microsoft.

Highlighting the importance of this agreement to SSGC, Mr. Munawar B. Ahmad, Managing Director SSGC said, "Our agreement with Microsoft shall give us access to its huge R&D investments in creating dependable and advanced software technologies ready for the Enterprise, and it will allow our company to continue providing reliable services to our valued customers with greater efficiencies". We proudly announce that SSGC being the leader in I.T field is now the first and only public sector utility company to obtain license from Microsoft Pakistan to use its state of art products."


Sate Bank of Pakistan on May 7, 2003 formally issued license to Muslim Commercial Bank Ltd, for opening the first dedicated Islamic Banking Branch to be located at 1st floor, Shaheen Complex, Karachi. MCB has, therefore, becomes the first conventional commercial bank in Pakistan to get a license for opening of its first dedicated Islamic Banking Branch, the branch is expected to commence its operation by July this year.

The bank has expressed its gratitude to SBP for expediting issuance of license, which shall go a long way in catering the requirements of customers desirous of availing Islamic Banking Facilities in the country.
