TERADATA HOSTS IT EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2002

The IT Excellence Awards ceremony was held in Karachi, hosted by Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation. Gold medals and certificates were presented to outstanding professionals in nine different categories related to information technology for excellence and achievements during the year 2001-2002.
In attendance were leading dignitaries and prominent personalities from the banking, insurance, education, government and airlines fields and other industries. Mr. Shaukat Aziz, advisor to the Prime Minister on Finance was the chief guest.

 

 

Shaukat Aziz said, "information technology has opened up vast new avenues for developing countries such as Pakistan to use the creativity of its young through education and training and to make fuller use of their talent for national development. Initiatives like the NCR IT Excellence Awards will go a long way to motivate different segments of the society to perform well in this growing field."

Earlier in his opening statement, NCR Country General Manager, Syed Veqar ul Islam said, "the NCR IT Excellence Awards have now become a symbol of prestige and great motivation for the outstanding individuals of the country. We are delighted to bring this recognition of achievement in IT in Pakistan, and we hope the awards will enhance Pakistan's role in this important field." He emphasized that today we are living in an information economy, where data is important. He also thanked all the judges and A. F. Fergusons for doing an outstanding job in conducting the entire ceremony.

Highlights of the event were live performances by Aamir Zaki and Hadiqa Kiani's newly formed band "Rough Cut". The grand finale of the evening paid tribute to one of the great legends of Pakistan's music industry, Noor Jehan by Zile Huma.

The period for nomination for the awards was August 2001 to July 2002. The nominations were judged on predefined criteria for each category according to the requirements of the industry. The categories were selected to cover the entire spectrum of the IT sector.

Following are the details of the award winners in nine categories:

1. SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT: The award for the Software Development went to Mr. Tayyab Ranta for his exceptional development work for a Cellular Billing Application Solution that has been implemented in Pakistan. This billing application software has been implemented in two out of four cellular companies in Pakistan. Mr Tayyab Ranta is currently working as Director of IT for Computer Research (Pvt.) Ltd.

2. NETWORKING: The winner of this year's IT Excellence Award for Networking is Syed Ahmer Ghazi. He is currently working as a Senior Consultant in Sysnet Pakistan (Pvt.) He was recognized for his most recent achievement, design and implementation of PTCL's Pakistan Internet Exchange network, which is one of the largest data network in Pakistan. This project has been very successful and has been instrumental in promoting the growth of the Internet in Pakistan.

3. IT EDUCATION: For his contribution in the field of IT Education, Prof. Dr. S. M. Aqil Burney has been awarded the NCR IT Excellence Award 2002. He is currently a professor in the Department of Computer Science, University of Karachi. The winner of this award has led a distinguished career in IT education, and has made significant contributions to the same field. He has been instrumental in spreading IT education at all levels in Pakistan.

4. IT YOUTH: Miss Afsah Shafquat has created three world records, one of which was recently broken by her own sister. The records are 1. World's Youngest Sun Certified Java Programmer, 2. World's Youngest Sun Certified Web Component Developer and 3. World's Youngest IBM Certified Object-Oriented Analyst & Designer. Currently, she is working as Operation Badar's teaching assistant at Sir Syed University and also as a Developer, Analyst & Designer in BadarSoft. She is just thirteen years of age.

 

 

5. IT RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT: In recognition of his valuable contributions towards research and development in general and for designing and developing several IT security products, Colonel Dr. Ashraf Masood has been awarded the NCR IT Excellence Award 2002 for IT Research and Development. He developed high-speed data links, virtual private network security gateways, HF and VHF radio security devices and PC-based secure messaging system.

6. SOFTWARE EXPORT: Mr. S.M Bilal Ahsan has been awarded the NCR IT Excellence Award 2002 in the Software Export Category. Not only is this young man technically adept, his excellent communications skills have enabled him to win valuable clients outside Pakistan. One of his noteworthy contributions includes the successful development and deployment of a decision processing system for a British concern, known as the 'Knowledge Mapper'.

7. IT PIONEER: This year's IT Pioneer Award winner is Zaigham Mahmood Rizvi who has not only pioneered the concept of IT Venture Capital in Pakistan, but also carried out a comprehensive survey on IT talent hunt in the country. He has been involved in IT education, launched the country's first net-based NGO called Net-NGO.com, which is serving the cause of the disabled through a non-profit organization. He launched the first web-based magazine called PakistanBankersDigest.com. He is currently heading the Pakistan Kuwait Investment Company.

8. IT PUBLICATION: The recipient of IT Publication award winner is Professor Dr Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry who is the main author of three excellent books and the only known professor with several books to his credit covering hardware and software in the Urdu language. Each publication highlighted the need, use and application of current technological issues. The best thing about his books is that they are affordable for all students.

9. LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: The recipient of IT Life Achievement award winner is Dr. A, Sattar who has made a significant contribution and played an effective positive role in the promotion of computerization in public sector organizations, training of government sector employees of various categories (including the highest level), evolution of computer-related curriculum and training programmes for over 20 years, as the director and later director general of the Pakistan Computer Bureau.

A panel of judges selected for their expertise, experience and acumen assessed the nominees for nine categories of the IT Awards. The panel of judges included a mix of educators, industry leaders and journalists from the private sector and government.

The judges were Dr. Hilal Qureshi, dean, National University; Mr. Aslam Hayat, GM Computers, PTCL; Mr. Wahaj us Siraj, chief executive officer, Micronet Broadband; Mr. Ayaz Ghaznavi, chief editor, ComputerWorld; Mr. Tariq Rashid, chief information officer, Mobilink; Mr. Jamshed Masood, Telecommunications Consultant; Mr. Tariq Mahmood Jadoon, assistant professor, LUMS; Mr. Abdul Ghaffar Memon, chairman of CSP and CEO Kalsoft Pvt. Ltd and Mr. Munawar B. Ahmad, president of CSP and managing director of Sui Southern Gas. The NCR IT Excellence Awards 2001 process was verified by A.F. Ferguson & Co.; Chartered Accountants, member firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

COUNTRIES FIRST CEMENT PLANT STARTS EXPORT

Lucky Cement, which is the largest depreciated plant in NWFP near to Afghan Border, has started cement exports to Afghanistan by road. It is the first COAL fired dry processing unit running on 100% capacity and have its self-generating 5 MW power plant selling energy to nearby industry in the Province.

It is already supplying cement to Peshawar/Islamabad Motorway project.

Due to its better quality and low cost of production, it also has established 35% share in NWFP cement consumers and sales. A great step taken by government to allow the banks for House Building Financing will boost cement industry in the country.

Export of cement will fetch foreign exchange and will have a great positive impact on Pakistan Economy in the days to come.

VICE PRESIDENT ASIA, MIDDLE EAST & FAR EAST SWISS WORLDCARGO VISITS KARACHI

Mr. Carl Schelfhaut, Vice President Asia, Middle East & Far East, Swiss WorldCargo recently visited Karachi.

During his short visit he met some of the top leading cargo agents and expressed his thanks for the good co-operation extended to Swiss WorldCargo in Pakistan. At the lunch hosted by Air Cargo Agents Association of Pakistan (ACAAP) a shield was presented to Mr. Carl Schelfhaut and Mr. Ghulam Ansari, Cargo Manager Pakistan, Swiss WorldCargo for their contribution towards promoting export out of Pakistan.

While addressing the invitees at a dinner hosted by Mr. M. I. Akbar, Chairman, GSA for Swiss WorldCargo in Pakistan, Mr. Schelfhaut showed interest on the potential and opportunities available Ex-Pakistan for freight industry. He also assured the cargo agents that the Swiss WorldCargo management would look into enhancing the capacity from Karachi station. In his concluding remarks, he expressed his thanks and gratitude for the wonderful hospitality extended to him.

PRIME COMMERCIAL BANK JOINS MNET

Muslim Commercial Bank and Prime Commercial Bank signed an (MoU) Memorandum of Understanding creating a mutually beneficial alliance which will enable Customers of Prime Commercial Bank to use ATM facilities offered by Muslim Commercial Bank and other MNET partner banks.

MoU singed in a simple ceremony at MCB Principal Office, Karachi. Mr. Mohammed Aftab Manzoor, President MCB and Mr. Saeed Iqbal Chaudhry, President Prime Commercial Bank singed the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations.
