Dr. Henning Schulte-Noelle (60) has decided to resign from his position as Chairman of the board of Management of Allianz AG at the end of the Annual General Meeting on April 29, 2003. As of the end of the Annual General Meeting of April 29, 2003 the Supervisory board has appointed Michael Diekmann (47) as new Chairman of the board of Management. Mr. Diekmann currently is member Board of Management, in charge of the insurance activities in North and South America and holds group-wide responsibility for Human Resources.



9th Private Sector meeting for the promotion of Trade and Joint Venture investment among Islamic countries was held in Sharjah, U.A.E. from 21-23 December, 2002. The meeting was organized by the Islamic Chamber of Commerce & Industry in collaboration with the Federation of UAE Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Sharjah Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

The meeting was inaugurated by H.E. Sheikh Fahim Bin Mohamed Al-Qasimi, Ministry of Commerce & Economy, U.A.E. The meeting was attended by around 400 delegates representing 35 OIC Member Countries including the General Secretariat of OIC, The Islamic Development Bank (IDB), Islamic Corporation for Development of Private Sector (ICD), Islamic Centre for Development of Trade (ICDT) and other Financial institutions and representatives of Muslim institutions operating in some Non-Islamic Countries.

A delegation of Modaraba Association of Pakistan led by its Chairman Mr. Waqar Ajmal Chaudhry attended the meeting. On this occasion Mr. Waqar Ajmal Chaudhry made a presentation on "Introduction to the Modaraba Sector" on second day of the meeting. Thereafter questions answers session was held. A number of participants showed their interest to know about the Modaraba concept.

In his speech the Chairman emphasised on bringing about awareness of the concept of Modaraba in Pakistan and as well as to extend the same among the Islamic Countries.

Mr. Waqar in his presentation dealt indepth with the background of the Modaraba sector in Pakistan, it regulatory framework, performance over the years and future prospects. He said that the concept of Modaraba emerged in 1979 as a result of the Government's initiative towards Islamization of the economy. Modaraba Companies and Modaraba (Floatation and Control) Ordinance was promulgated in 1980 to provide the statutory framework for organizing business enterprises according to the injunction of Islam.

He elaborated that Modaraba can undertake any kind of business activity that is not against the injunctions of Islam. Moreover, a Modaraba can either be a multipurpose or a specific purpose Modaraba, and can be formed for other a fixed or an indefinite period.


Muslim Commercial Bank's Corporate & Islamic Banking Group arranged a day long Hajj Seminar at Baitul Hujjaj, Karachi to apprise all intending hajis on rituals of Haj. Mr. Naimatullah Khan, Nazim City District Government, Karachi inaugurated the seminar.


The Consulate General of France in Karachi wishes to inform visa applicants that only business and airport transit visas are being issued by the French Embassy in Islamabad.

With effect from the 1st of January, 2003, the visa fees will be collected at the time of depositing the file at the visa section of the French Embassy, Islamabad.

This amount will give the applicant the right to have his/her file studied in detail without any guarantee that the visa will be granted.

In case the visa is granted, no extra payment shall be required.

No refund will be given if the visa is not granted, or granted for a shorter period of time than requested.

Applicants are advised to make their travel plan well in advance. Normally, four weeks are required to process and deliver a visa.




Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), a major utility company providing natural gas to homes and businesses in southern region of Pakistan, has installed a latest call center to provide faster and improved services to its 800,000' customer-base.

SSGC's new call center will provide 24-hour service to the customers calling on telephone number 119. The customer service agents will provide general information related to new connections and restoration of supply, procedures, products and services. Agents will also provide assistance in complaint registration to the callers. The registered complaints will be saved and automatically sent to the back office where they will be printed and handed over to the relevant staff for further processing, making the function of customer services highly efficient.

It is important to note that, traditionally, call center solutions have been the domain of international telecommunication giants from USA, Germany, France and Sweden, however, this latest call center for SSGC has been installed by a Pakistani company, ZRG International (private) Limited that is a telephony solution specialist comprised of Pakistani telecom and software professional. ZRG holds the largest share of growing call center market in Pakistan.

The call center solution for SSGC is based on the most modern Computer Telephone Integration or CTI technology that is completely based on international standards and latest technology. It is also aligned with the overall data center trends, network strategy and technology direction.
