Material Science can play a pivotal role in dev-
elopment of Defence strategic materials

Performance of Ministry of Science has been impressive by any standard. Pak Telecom has made profit and is expected to attract investment. IT in the country got a big boost , Research in universities got a new impetus except for Quality Control & Standardization Authority which was expected to generate lot of fire work failed miserably probably because instead of appointing an Engineer to run this engineering job somebody was picked up from source list. The nation will have to suffer till the appointee retires or some building falls.

In the previous governments there was no bar on selection of Minister of Science & Technology, in one instance a film director because of his hit film ( Beyond the last mountain) was selected to run this technical set up.Had this trend continued we would have had film actor cum producer Babra Sharif next. The present Minister is exception being highly qualified and committed for betterment. Gen. Musharraf in his long list of Reengineering amendments can lay down the qualification of future Science Minister to have a Ph,D degree with 100 research publications and also for Health Minister a medical degree with not more than 100 patients waiting for him in the next world.

DEVELOPMENT THRU ADVANCED MATERIALS

DEFENSE INDUSTRY:

Material Science can play a pivotal role in development of Defence strategic materials: the new version of armour plate is instead of being made out of Hardened and Tempered alloy steel is being made of composite material and because of the light weight it can move very fastly. Pakistan has a very strong base for developing its defence exports which has already crossed $ 50 million mark.

With exports of tanks the figures would improve considerably.

SAINDAK PROJECT: In the development of copper gold project at Saindak material science can help in better yields.

ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY MATERIALS: Turning Desert into Greenery: By carrying out research in the water retention properties of high polymer plastics. Calculating the amount of water retaining plastic to be mixed in earth under specific conditions, pulverizing the plastic into granules and developing technology that can be used to convert desert into greenlands. This technique has been applied successfully in Egypt and UAE, Mexico and Japan and can be successfully used here turning our water logged saline lands into farms and forest. Thar and other desert are waiting for this new innovation.

Utilizing waste cooking oil to make e-oil a bio-diesel fuel and using it in trucks etc

STEEL INDUSTRY:

In the Iron and steel sector Refractories and alternate materials will be new materials.

Building Bridges using wire cables made of several thousand wires.

Wire diameter of 5.23 mm having tensile strength of 200kg/square millimeter have been used in Japan. Developing these wires out of steel produced locally. Imagine Lyari expressway build on this pattern cables supporting the briges instead of monument of ugly structure. Nespak can note this material improvement as design development.

Developing Fabrics made out of polymer having tensile strength about 10 times that of steel and able to stand high temperatures, toughness using this material in the manufacture of optical fibres a material which is having wide applications something which we can use in our communication development.

It is possible to make a fibre one mm thick which can hold an object weighing more than Mike Tyson American boxer also known for biting his opponent ears.

Making Integrated circuitchip( semi conductors) in small thickness about the size of a single grain of sand, so that the chips can contain over 100 bits of ID information stored in ROM( Read only memory). This can be applied for wireless communications, detecting counterfeit money etc. This is a smart material and dream of every material scientist in Pakistan.

TRANSPORTATION:

Developing large Tunnel Boring Machines made out of extremely hard metal to make subways in Karachi and other big cites of the country.

Improving agriculture yields and automation with robitics in the manufacturing of cars.

What can be done?.

Can the Ministry of Science make the dream of Material Scientist come true.

Yes it can. It needs to coordinate bring Steel Industry, Polymeric and Textile Institutes, Nuclear Institutes, Automobile Industries R&D, Telecom Research and Urban Planning etc all located in Karachi and develop an Institute of Advanced Materials Science in Karachi. Use Magic Hand of Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan and others. The rest will be done.

The area that needs immediate focus is development of Material Science in the country. Optical fibre development, Material for desalination, Composite and polymer and deep drawing grade steel for automobile sector, electronics material, smart materials, alternate textile materials, and then iron ores, coals and Advanced materials are areas that have to be taken care of with full force.

There is need to be a coordinator who can channel the present resources effectively and Ministry of Science can play the major role. So act before its too late and Lead from front.

Pakistan Survived because of ALLAH, and then advanced Nuclear capability. Lets add on with advanced Material and let our enemy know we dare mighty things. So Ministry of Science Go for Material Science.
