NCR announces National IT Excellence Awards winners

The much-awaited NCR IT Excellence Awards were held in Islamabad to recognize outstanding IT professionals in eight different categories related to information technology.

The grand event was attended by leading dignitaries and prominent personalities from government, media and the corporate world. Federal Minister of Finance Shaukat Aziz was the chief guest on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion the Finance Minister said, "Information Technology has opened up vast new avenues for developing countries such as Pakistan to use the creativity of their young through education and training and to make fuller use of their talent for national development. Initiatives like NCR IT Excellence Awards will go a long way towards creating motivation amongst different segments of the society to perform well in this ever-growing field."

Earlier in his opening statement Country General Manager, NCR, Syed Veqar ul Islam, said, "IT Excellence awards are designed to motivate outstanding individuals for doing an outstanding job for Pakistan. They will also serve as encouragement for others to perform well in future. He congratulated the winners on their achievement, and made commitments for continuation of these awards annually. He also announced the inclusion of another award, i.e. 'Life Time Achievement Award' in IT from next year." Furthermore, he informed the gathering about the setting up of NCR's Center of Expertise in Pakistan in the area of data warehousing, which he said has already started implementing projects outside Pakistan.

The period for consideration for nomination for the awards is June 2000 to July 2001. The nominations were judged on predefined criteria for each category according to the requirements of the industry. The categories have been selected to cover the entire spectrum of the IT sector, thus enabling the specialized effort in each category to stand out and be recognized.

Following are the details of the award winners in various categories:

Software Development: The award for the Software Development went to Mr. Kashif Hisam for his development work in Urdu Mahir Software. The winning effort relates to software development in Urdu, which allows for use of Urdu in MS Office XP environment, thus allowing for creation of documents, spreadsheets, presentations and databases in Urdu.

Networking: The winner of this year's IT Excellence award for Networking went to Mr. Shaikh Adil Gul, for the second year running. He is currently working as manager network systems and support IT Division Aga Khan University. His most recent achievement for which he has been selected for the award is design and implementation of Wide Area Network, using virtual Private Networking Technology, over the Internet, using point-to-point protocol at the Aga Khan University Hospital.

IT Educationalist: For his contribution in the field of IT Education, Prof. Dr. Khalid Rashid has been awarded NCR IT Excellence Award 2001. He is currently a professor and head department of Computer Science, International Islamic University and deputy Dean FMS IIU. The winner of this award has led a distinguished career in IT education, and has made significant contributions to the field of IT education, not only in Pakistan, but abroad as well. He has been instrumental in development of standardized curriculum for IT Education at Bachelors and Masters level in Pakistan.

IT Research & Development: In recognition of his valuable contributions towards Research and Development in general and Pakistan academic Intranet Project in particular, Dr. Muhammad Hassan Zaidi has been awarded the NCR IT Excellence Awards 2001 for IT Research and Development. He developed a cost effective system, which comprehensively brings the different universities of Pakistan together within one network. He is presently serving as a Wing Commander in PAF and deployed as Head of Academics at NUST Institute of Information Technology.

IT Pioneer: This year's IT Pioneer Award winner is Mr. Mohammad Afzal, who has been actively involved as a member of the IT Commission Work Group on development of Human Resources in the field of IT and has worked with the Government in Policy regulatory issues and planning as an Executive Council Member and President of Computer Society of Pakistan, Islamabad Chapter.

IT Publication: The recipient of IT Publication award winner is Mr. Muhammad Kamil, who has written more than 100 articles, (mostly tutorials & pictorials) in Urdu language, and has also written informative book "HTML & FTP" in Urdu, which has got its 4th re-print from June 2000 - June 2001. This book has been very widely read and accepted all over Pakistan. He is currently working as Editor in Internet Section of Monthly Global Science Magazine.

IT Youth: Miss Manal Ahmad is the proud winner of this category, who is amongst the youngest females to have completed MCSE and MCDBA in 2001. Her other achievements include: MIT Junior Summit Award and one of the founders and editors of the Junior Summit On-Line Newspaper and youngest participant invited by the ITU to attend the World Forum, which is an honor for Pakistan.

A panel of judges selected for their expertise, experience and acumen assessed the nominees for different categories of IT Awards. The NCR IT Excellence Awards 2001 process was verified by A.F.Ferguson & Co.; Chartered Accountants, member firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

ECPL received the Karachi Stock Exchange's "Top Companies Award" for the year 2000. The award was presented to 25 listed companies for their performance during the year in review.

On the basis of the selection criteria, 25 companies were selected for the Top Companies Award for the year 2000. Top Companies Award was instituted by the Karachi Stock Exchange in 1978 and ECPL happens to be the only company that has received this award for 19 times.

Crescent Leasing Corporation Limited First (1st) Tranche of Term Finance Certificate (TFC), of Rs. 250 million was oversubscribed.

Out of Rs. 250 million, Rs. 175 million were placed in the private placement, and Rs. 75 million were offered to the general public against which total of Rs. 86.785 million were received and accepted by the company utilizing its green shoe option as approved by the SECP.

LUX International set to host first 'Style Awards' in Pakistan

PSO holds first-ever Operations Conference

Addressing the first-ever Operations Conference 2002 of Pakistan State Oil, which concluded on January 15th at a local hotel, Mr Tariq Kirmani said he wanted to see professionally trained, high quality workforce working as a team in an environment that recognized and rewarded performance.

The theme of the two-day conference was "Let's Be the Best."

Explaining the values that he wanted to see in the company, Mr Kirmani said that he sought ethics and integrity, quality and productivity, innovation and creativity, diversity and teamwork among other values.

The managing director said that in 32 years of his experience, he had seen only two changes in the prices of petroleum products while in the last three-and-a-half months, there had been no less than nine price changes.

Mr Kirmani said the first-ever operations conference of PSO would result in improved operation at all depots and installations and would lead to cost effective distribution of POL products.

Mr Aftab Ejaz, GM Operations and Construction, said the Operations Department was focusing on operational readiness and effectiveness, use of improved monitoring methods, modern methodologies and concepts, rationalization and customer oriented culture. Explaining the new trends in the market, he said apart from other factors, optimum utilization of resources, modern operating techniques and quality and quantity concepts had become essential for any company to flourish in the market.

At the end of the conference, the managing director gave away the award for the Best Installation Manager to M Tariq Khan of Machiche while Chaudhry M Zaman of Chak Pirana Depot was declared as the Best Depot In-charge.

Microsoft Launches Enterprise Security Program in Pakistan

Microsoft organized a one-day seminar on "Security in the Enterprise" at local hotel entitled 'Microsoft Security Roadshow'. The Chief Guest at the seminar was Mr. Salman Ansari, Advisor to the Minister of Science and Technology. The seminar was attended by Chief Executive Officers (CEO's), Chief Technical Officers (CTO's), and IT Heads representing enterprise customers, financial institutions, the government, ISP's, telecos and other partners.
