The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan's (ICAP) Annual mega event of the Post Budget Seminar, organized by ICAP's Southern Regional Committee, was held at a local hotel in Karachi on Wednesday 19 June, 2002. The Chief Guest at the Seminar was Mr. Wakil Ahmad Khan, CBR Member Direct Taxes, and the Seminar was chaired by Mr. A. Husain A. Basrai, President ICAP who also presented the welcome address.

The speakers at the Seminar were Mr. S. Masoud Naqvi, Mr. Ebrahim Sidat and Syed Shabbar Zaidi, who made excellent presentations to over 900 participants including chartered accountants and other senior managers from commerce and industry.

The speakers discussed the economic aspects of the Budget and amendments made in tax laws through Finance Ordinance, 2002. They were of the view that the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, was an excellent legislation and should be implemented with the same spirit by the Tax Administration. The law would add to building of confidence between the tax payers and the tax administration.

The presentations were followed by a Question-Answer session, and concluding remarks were made by Mr. Wakil Ahmad Khan. A vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Mushtaq Hirani, Chairman of ICAP's Southern Regional Committee.


Pakistan State Oil (PSO), the largest oil marketing company in Pakistan, has decided to institute gold medals for outstanding students of six universities.

The company will award gold medals to students who are declared first overall in the MBA class in any discipline from the Institute of Business Administration, Karachi, Lahore University of Management Sciences, Lahore, and the Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad.

Likewise, a PSO gold medal will be awarded to top students from the mechanical engineering departments of NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi, and GIK Institute of Science and Technology, Topi.

PSO will also honor one graduate from Electrical Engineering from University of Engineering, Khuzdar, who is declared first from this discipline every year.

All gold medals will accompany a cash award of Rs 10,000 and a certificate of merit from PSO.

The Board of Directors of Prime Bank in a meeting held on June 13-14, 2002, have recommended an interim Bonus Issue of 15% to their shareholders for the currnt financial year. With this Bonus Issue the paid-up capita1 of the Bank increases to Rs.1.008 billion comfortably meeting the requirement of the State Bank of Pakistan for all commercial banks to increase their paid-up capital to Rs.1 billion by January 1, 2003. Prime Bank has achieved this well ahead of the deadline.

Prime Bank is a progressive private bank with a deposit base of around Rs. l billion, gross advances of about Rs. 8 billion and total assets of over Rs.17.2 billion. Its profit before tax for the first quarter of the current year of Rs.75.6 million showed a growth of 25% over the corresponding period of last year. It has 23 branches in 13 cities of the country and has plans to open up to ten more branches during the current year serving middle market commercial and consumer clientele. The Honourable Provincial Minister for Health, Major General (Retd.) Ahsan Ahmed made an official visit to Kalia Group offices on the morning of 12th June 2002. Lever Brothers and ABN AMRO Bank signed an agreement for Direct Debit System for country-wide collection of funds from the company's distributors' accounts. The new collection arrangement which has been developed jointly by Lever and ABN will result in improvement in the collection process.


Girne American University (GAU), the parent University of BIZTEK, Institute of Business and Technology held its 14th convocation and graduation ceremony on 1st June 2002 in North Cyprus, Turkey. The ceremony was conducted in the presence of His Excellency, Rauf R. Denktas, President Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
