ICI was formed on December 7, 1926, by the merger
of four of the largest chemical companies in the UK, Brunner Mond
& Company Limited, Nobel Industries Limited, British Dyestuffs
Corporation Limited and United Alkali Company Limited. The ICI Group
is one of the world's largest producer of specialty products and
paints with over 50,000 products and more than 200 manufacturing
facilities in over 55 countries worldwide. With the completion of its
transformation process, which began in 1997, there has been a decisive
shift away from commodity chemicals towards specialty products
tailored to customers' needs.
The portfolio concentrates on foods, personal care,
specialty polymers, electronic materials, fragrances, flavours and
decorative coatings.
ICI Pakistan Limited is a Subsidiary of ICI Plc,
UK. It was set up as a public limited company in Pakistan in 1952.
ICI's presence in this part of the world, however, predates the
formation of the public limited company and indeed, Pakistan itself.
Today, ICI Pakistan manufactures and sells a range of industrial and
consumer products, including, Polyester Staple Fibre, Soda Ash, Sodium
Bicarbonate, Paints, Specialty Chemicals, Agrochemicals, and arranges
manufacture on a toll basis of Pharmaceutical products as well as
trading in various specialised chemicals including Polyurethanes,
Acrylics and Titanium Dioxide for use in industries in Pakistan. In
2001 the Company's PTA Business was demerged to be housed in Pakistan
PTA Ltd which is also an ICI Plc subsidiary. This business was set up
in 1995 and a USD 490 m PTA Manufacturing facility at Port Qasim was
commissioned in 1998. ICI Pakistan has a 25% shareholding in Pakistan
PTA Ltd which is a public quoted company.
The turnover of ICI Pakistan Limited for the year
ended 31 December 2001 was Rs 12.8 bn and gross assets employed
amounted to Rs 14.98 bn. It is one of the largest quoted companies on
the Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad Stock Exchanges with a paid-up share
capital of Rs 1.4 bn. The Company has 1421 direct employees and over
1400 people provide services through contractual arrangements. ICI
Pakistan has a proud history of sustained investments in the Pakistan
economy in basic manufacture.
With annual sales of Rs 12.8 bn in Pakistan and
progressive profit improvement. ICI Pakistan's operations create value
for over 21,000 Pakistani shareholders.

sensitive to the needs for social development and community services.

SODA ASH BUSINESS
1944-2002
2002 marks the 58th Anniversary of ICI Pakistan's
Soda Ash Plant in Khewra. While the initial work on setting up the
plant dates back to 1929, commercial production began in 1944.
The original plant capacity of 18 ktpa has been
increased to 225 ktpa, through a number of expansion projects. The
most recent expansion included installation of DCS Control System, 5.2
MW co-generation installation and debottlenecking of various units, at
a cost of Rs. 525 million.
To improve the quality of product and operating
efficiencies 'Total Quality' was introduced in 1985. Management
initiatives and consistency of manufacturing excellence led to the
ISO-9002 certification for the Soda Ash Business in 1999.
The product range was diversified in 1995 with the
commissioning of a 10,000 tonnes of Refined Sodium Bicarbonate plant.
The Soda Ash Business strives for continuous
improvement of its already excellent Safety, Security, Health and
Environment (SSHE) record. In 1998, ICI Pakistan was the joint winner
of the ICI plc; Chief Executive's Safety Award through the Soda Ash
submission of 'SITARA', a project that focused on safety through
teamwork. In 2001 & 2002 the Soda Ash Business was the recipient
of ICI Leadership Award for sustained SHE Excellence.
