Engr. Rukhsana Zuberi is the Chief Executive Officer of "Technical Education Centre" (Tec). Tec, which is among the pioneers in the field of Information Technology, was established in 1992 in Pakistan. The Centre is the first Microsoft Certified Technical Education centre and the largest Authorized Sylvan Prometric Testing in Pakistan offering IT training and on-line testing services for International certifications.

Rukhsana Zuberi, though having altogether different academic background has proved her entrepreneurial acumen by leading her organization as one of the leading organizations in Information Technology. She did her B.E from NED university and then started her career as an engineer in National Refinery. She moved to Saudi Arabia later on and worked there with a French company for quite sometimes. On her return to Pakistan, she decided to establish her own business in the field of Information Technology when IT was in its infancy in Pakistan.

PAGE: There is a mushroom growth of IT institutes in Pakistan, how would you differentiate "Tec" from other contemporaries?

Rukhsana: Tech is the pioneer training centre that has introduced International certification Programs in Pakistan in 1995. Being a pioneer in this field, Tech was the first institute having franchise to represent Microsoft, IBM and other top companies in Pakistan. You may call Tec as a trendsetter and countless institutes copied the name in one form or the other. The word Tec became a symbol for IT education, she said with a sense of achievement.

PAGE: Would you like to elaborate the areas in which your institute is operating?

Rukhsana: Tech was established with a mission to provide quality training in the field of Information Technology, in a short span of two years i.e. in 1994, Tech became the first authorized training source for Microsoft, Lotus, WordStar, IBM and AT&T. Tech provides training and technical support on a wide range of software products including operating systems, programming tools, NetWare, UNIX Systems, Communication software and project Management software. After 8 years of inception, Tec has now grown to a large and well-reputed organization having two venues in Karachi and one in Lahore.

PAGE: What type of training and courses Tec is providing?

Rukhsana: Training programs offered by Tec include short courses (Basic applications, 4 months courses in Networking, Software Development and Web Page Designing, Certification Programs MCP, MCP+ Internet, MCSE, MCDBA, MCSD and one year advanced diploma in Computer Science.

PAGE: How do you see the future of IT industry in Pakistan especially in the backdrop of the current setback in the United States?

Rukhsana: Although the recent setback faced by the IT in the United States being described as burst of the bubble should not be taken as a permanent feature. Ups and downs are essentially a part of the game in any segment of the economy. However, it was not the end of the world, tremendous opportunities still exists within Pakistan as only a scratch of the economy. The IT sector has to go a long way and we have just begun the journey. She said that Tech specializes in corporate training having a prestigious client-base which includes national and multinational companies like Union Texas, Emirates Airlines, Swiss Airlines, Hubco, PIA, ANZ, Hino Pak, Pak Air Force, Abbot Laboratories etc.

PAGE: There was a great demand for Certified IT professionals abroad sometimes back, what is the current trend?

Rukhsana: The market forces generally dictate the demand or supply and economic conditions which is a natural phenomenon. However it could be distasteful rather disgusting if the decline in demand was due to mistrust or loss of credibility. It is unfortunate that some of the institutes providing on-line testing facilities were allegedly involved in maneuvering of on-line certification to the incapable persons. These fake people managed to obtain H1 visa however a large number of them had to return when real worth was exposed. This is very bad when the name of the country is involved. The loss of credibility harms the credibility of the entire of sector. Recurrence of such incidents have to be controlled at any cost to keep up the hard earned reputation by the real and genuine people of this country, she observed with a firm resolve.

PAGE: Do you feel that unaffordable price for quality education specially in the field of Information Technology is one of the major concern and a real hurdle to spread the light of education to the grass root level?

Rukhsana: Certainly, cost of product of quality goods would be naturally more than the normal one, however as far as Tec was concerned although the fee level is on the higher side for corporate sector, yet no deserving student was turn down by Tec merely for want of money. Tec also offers scholarships to the deserving students. The scholarships offered by Tec are sponsored by renowned personalities like Dr. Abdullah Omer Nassif, Engineer Illahi Bux Soomro and Zohra Begum Siddiqui Memorial scholarships, Rukhsana said.
