An interview with Prof. Dr. Amanat Ali Jalbani,
Chairperson, Department of Management Sciences, Isra University
Question: In your opinion what is the future of
Answer: People from ancient times have engaged in
exchanging produce of value with each other. Man will keep on exchanging
the products they value. To facilitate these exchanges man will always
need businessmen, and in order to bring about efficiency in creating
exchanges businessmen need training and education. Today as the business
world has become increasingly complex, the businessman need to
understand its working and how to use different situations to his own
advantage. He needs to analyze different economic scenarios so as to
formulate and implement his own strategies for his own advantage. The
advent of Information Technology has helped to shape new business
organizations, which utilize the Internet to market their products. This
situation calls for imparting greater knowledge and training to the
managers, helping them understand the new tools of doing business. To
fulfil these needs, a large number of Business Schools have sprung up,
but only a few impart quality business education. With recent rapid
advances in computer technology people have turned increasingly to
computer education, but they fail to recognize that computers are just
the tools for business. Computer Science is not an end but the means to
promote business and other activities. Computer scientists cannot create
business applications unless they have knowledge about business. That is
the main reason why degrees in Information Technology now include at
least thirty-percent courses from the business field. Therefore
Universities like Isra has started offering Management degree programs
like BBA-IT and MITM (Masters in Information Technology Management)
which merge the two fields of Business Administration and Computer
Sciences. The commercial and industrial sector will still require and
continue to hire specialists in the fields of Marketing, Finance,
Manufacturing and Banking as analysts and managers.
Q: What in your opinion is a quality Business
Ans: Quality Business Education aims at producing
managers who can understand the complexities of contemporary business
and can make growth oriented decisions. Quality Business education
prepares young managers who can handle the pressures of competition and
device strategies to gain market share. This knowledge cannot be
imparted from the textbooks alone, but practical training gained through
internships helps considerably. The students of Isra University are
therefore required to go through eight-week internships each for their
BBA and MBA degrees. These internships bring about mature and realistic
thinking in students.
Q: How business education is important to uplift the
economy of any country?
Ans: Through business education we can produce
better managers for future growth. Lack of managerial expertise results
in inefficient resource allocation and utilization, which is quite
damaging for a poor country like Pakistan. As the protection given by
our government from foreign competition will be reduced due to WTO
restrictions the Pakistani businesses will increasingly find themselves
competing with high quality foreign products. This calls for adopting
new techniques of doing business and creating products. Privatization of
the government sector corporations also has induced the employees of
these entities to seek business education to improve their chances of
retention and promotion in these organizations or to seek new jobs. This
situation has resulted in development of Executive degree programs. All
these changes will highlight the importance of business education for
the uplift of our economy.
Q: What do you think makes business education any
different at Isra University?
Ans: As far as Business Education is concerned
Isra University is as good as any Business School in Pakistan. Not only
do we concentrate on technical aspects of business but also, on ethical
and moral implications of Business. We want to produce conscientious
business managers embodying the spirit of Islam, but this does not
necessarily make us conservative. Our courses are in line with the
global trends. Many of the textbooks we use are the same that are used
in good Universities of USA and UK. Our BBA program is of 128 credit
hours keeping in line with international standards. Furthermore our
courses are suited to the Pakistani economy, which mostly comprises of
small business enterprises. Through field work and research papers, the
students do learn a lot about how business is carried out in our own
country. So, when one enters into real business, he does not become an
alien to our local traditional business methods as might sometimes
happen when one studies in a foreign school. Finally, we believe in
providing quality education at a reasonable cost and training our
students as professionals in their fields as well as good members of our
