New Country Chairman and MD of Shell
Mr. David M. Weston, currently Chairman and
Managing Director of Shell Pakistan Limited will move to London to a
senior position as head of Shell's Global Aviation Business early next
month. He came to Pakistan in June 1999.
Mr. Weston will be replaced by Mr. Farooq
Rahmatullah, who is currently Director Operations, Shell Pakistan
Limited and Director, Pakistan Refinery Limited. Mr. Rahmatullah will
take over as Country Chairman and Managing Director of Shell Pakistan
Limited with effect from 9th April 2001.
Born in 1944, Mr. Farooq Rahmatullah joined the
company on 1st March 1968 after graduating with a Law degree from
Peshawar University. He brings with him wide experience, knowledge and
expertise within the Industry, particularly in Pakistan. He has held
various jobs in the company during his career. These include Retail,
HR, Chemicals, Distribution, Supply and Transport and Lubricant, From
1996 to 1998 he spent three years with in the UK as Manager in
Business & Strategy Division of Shell International Petroleum
Company, London. Mr. Farooq Rahmatullah takes over the business at a
time when the industry is going through radical changes in the form of
Cost and Benefits of National Tax Survey
The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) is optimistic of
meeting the revenue target this year irrespective of 'not encouraging
results' of the ongoing tax survey. This was said by Mohammad Ramzan
Bhatti, Collectors of Sales Tax (East and West) at a seminar on
"Cost and Benefits of National Tax Survey" organized by
Finance Students Forum of Newport University. Bhatti admitted that
they were not revolutionaries who could bring an overnight change in
revenue collection, and said that by educating people a voluntary
compliance to tax regime could be witnessed. The need for launch of
tax survey was felt after various tax schemes had failed miserably.
Earlier, Asad Mustafa introduced the University and
spoke about the efforts of Finance Students Forum. Newport University
is a private institution based at Newport Beach California. It started
its operations in Karachi in November 1993.
Wasful Hasan Siddiqui, a Sales Tax Consultant
talked about the merits and demerits of the Scheme. He criticized the
government for deviating from its stance that no previous record would
be questioned. The Chief Guest, Shahzada Shaikh, Additional Chief
Secretary of Government of Sindh said that there should be no
compromise on payment of tax, but the irritants and difficulties being
faced by tax payers should be removed.
ITCN Asia 2001: City of Karachi Prepares to
Organize Region's Largest IT event
The city of Karachi, intended to become the
region's IT hub, is preparing to organize one of the largest IT events
in this part of the world with the start of ITCN Asia 2001 from March
24 - 26, 2001 at the Expo Center.
A number of organizations and individuals, experts
in their respective fields, and also the local administration are
making an all-out effort to put together a grand show to welcome
delegates from abroad and all over Pakistan.

resource" said Hafeez Sheikh, Sindh Finance Minister and also
Chairman, Sindh IT Board, which is hosting the ITCN Asia 2001.
Dr. Khursheed Nizam of Jamal's Yellow Pages, one of
the principal organizers of the event is spearheading the operations
at the ITCN Asia 2001 and was of the view that final arrangements are
being made to ensure that the event is nothing short of an
international experience for all participants.
Mr. David Hwang, Deputy Chief Executive of
Ecommerce Gateway Pte Limited, who are also one of the organizers of
the event was happy with the planning of the event so far and endorsed
his company's commitment to attract the region's key IT players and
companies to take part in the ITCN Asia 2001.
The ITCN Asia 2001 one of the region's largest IT
event designed to be a one-stop meeting place for trade matching of
the global and regional IT players with decision makers from business
and government sectors. Prominent IT companies, professionals and
delegates from the regional governments and private sectors, as well
as media from all over the world are expected to converge in Karachi
to attend the exhibition and 2-day conference.
Asiatic Goes Multinational
Asiatic Advertising Private Limited, one of the
leading advertising agencies in Pakistan, has now become the first
Pakistani multi-national advertising agency with 100 per cent equity
investment by J. Walter Thompson and WPP, till recently its
advertising affiliate. The company will now be known as J. Walter
Thompson Asiatic Private Limited.
"The new agency will have access to a wealth
of experience in advertising and communications possessed by the JWT
worldwide network," said Mr. Miles Colebrook, Group President, J.
Walter Thompson International, while announcing the re-launch of the
agency. "We will make significant investments in manpower
training which will help JWT Asiatic to further upgrade its creative
standards and approach to planning advertising. The future generations
in JWT will be pleased we made this move" he continued.

Established in 1963, Asiatic started on a small
note with just five staff members. Over the years the agency
partnership grew under the leadership of Mr. Anwar Rammal, ably
supported by Mr. F.H. Punthakey and Mr. Ghayasuddin Sheikh and soon
reached super league cadre of the advertising industry in Pakistan
winning several local and international awards. Asiatic signed its
affiliation agreement with JWT in 1989 and branched off into Lahore in
J. Walter Thompson, an agency in the WPP Group, plc,
has worldwide billings of US $10.6 billion and offices in 90
countries. It ranks as the fourth largest advertising network in the
world and the second largest in the USA.
FedEx Annual Gala Dinner
Once again FedEx GSP-Pakistan has dazzled the world
of commitment. On 24th February 2001, FedEx GSP-Pakistan had its
Annual Gala Dinner, in lieu of 12th Anniversary celebrations at
Marriott Hotel. Top delegates from their regional head office in Dubai
flew in to make this occasion memorable for years to come. The event
reflected the corporate image of FedEx with the thematic of corporate
colours and was attended by various dignitaries from prestigious
organizations. The event was graced by speeches from Mr. Arshad
Hussain, General Manager FedEx GSP - Pakistan, Mr. Akram Ali, Managing
