The Height of Delight

By S. Asif Ali Bokhari
Director, Export Promotion Bureau
Jan 01 - 14, 2001

Almighty Allah has bestowed Pakistan and in particular N.W.F.P. with a wide range of fruits such as Apples, Oranges, Persimmon, Guava, Lokat, Plums, Apricot, Peaches, Lichee, Pears, Strawberry, Pomegranate, Bananas, Cherries & Dates.

Dates are a traditional part of our Islamic Culture as our Holy Quran defined in its more than twenty verses. Our Holy Prophet (PBUH) urged Muslims to eat dates as it is the world's only 100% complete and balanced diet. It could be used as a primary energy source for attaining the maximum energy for every age group in order to retrieve lost energies.

In the world 4.9 million tons dates are grown per year in more than 60 countries, which is 23% of the total dry fruits in the world. Major date producing countries are Iran with 80% share, Egypt with 15% share, Iraq with 13% share, Saudi Arabia with 12% share and Pakistan with 11% share of the total world production. Thus Pakistan stands at 5th position in the world as date producing country. Other date producing countries are Algeria, U.A.E., Oman, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, U.S.A., Yemen, Qatar, Bahrain, China, Mali, Cyprus, Gaza and Mexico etc. Total production of dates in Pakistan is 5.4 Lac tons, the share of Sindh is 2.8 lac tons, N.W.F.P. 50 thousand tons, Balochistan 1.75 lac tons and Punjab is 39 thousand tons.

Dates are being grown in all the four provinces of Pakistan over an area of about 75,000 Hectors. In Pakistan more than 130 varieties are grown. Province wise commercial varieties are in Sindh Aseel, Fasli, Bhedir, Karbalian, Kupro and Mithri N.W.F.P. Dhakki, Mazavati, Kango, Gookna Balochisrtan Bagma Jangi, Kaharba & Mozawati Punjab Hillavi, Khudrawi, Zahidi & Shmran.

Export Promotion Bureau has been making concerted efforts to promote the export of non-traditional items with the objective to diversify the countries exports. Accordingly Export Promotion Bureau started organizing Date Show at Khairpur Mirs (Sindh), Turbat and Karachi in the year 1999. These shows have generated lot of interest among the growers and exporters of dates that its export has picked up from 22 million dollar in 1998-99 to 25.8 million dollars in 1999-2000. Thus showing an increase of 15.7% over the year. Emulating the success of Date Shows at Khairpur Mirs (Sindh), Turbat and Karachi, Export Promotion Bureau decided to hold a Date Show in D.I. Khan from 26-27 August, 2000 in collaboration with D.I. Khan Chamber of Commerce and Industry to create awareness and interest among the date Growers, Horticulturists, Active Exporters and Foreign Buyers from date importing countries with the view to introduce the date of N.W.F.P., besides, identifying measures for boosting export of date specially from N.W.F.P.
