Karachi Institute of Information Technology is an immense setup to provide internationally acclaimed IT education. KIIT was established in 1998, soon it became a reliable name in IT education. The KIIT is collaborated with the University of Huddersfield (UOH) UK which is recognized in Pakistan by UGC. The rationale behind the agreement with UOH is to provide high standard IT education to the young people in Pakistan, as mushroom growth of dubious private institutions and inability of public sector to update the curriculum had badly affected the education in this field.

Courses offered: KIIT offers a career oriented courses which not only equips students with most advanced and sophisticated education but also provide certain employment opportunities. It offers B.Sc (Hons), B.Sc Computing (Software Development) and M.Sc/Postgraduates in Software development. Software development courses focus on the design and development of software as computer softwares are used in a wide range of institutions in the public, private and commercial sector in almost every field and profession. Computer software production involves many different tools and techniques.

The B.Sc honors programme offered by KIIT is designed by keeping in view the demands, which is based around one theme and two sub-themes. Software development is the main theme and addresses the subject at theoretical, practical and applications levels. The information sub-theme is concerned with the purpose, behaviour and context of the information system, which includes business organizations, human aspects of computing and design for human computer interaction. While the technology sub-theme draws from the computer system architecture, concurrent systems, communication networks and data base to explore both basic functionality and use of components to build large and powerful system.

M.Sc offered by KIIT, is a modular postgraduate course that teaches the latest techniques of software development including rigorous software engineering approach and formal specification of software. The course starts with the basic of computer programming and hardware and leads to competence in implementing a computer based system via a vocationally relevant project for the award of MSc.

In modern education world, Industrial liaison of any organization is an important parameter to evaluate the academic programme. Students and faculty members at KIIT maintain the highest level of industrial association with the leading IT firms and software houses in Pakistan, the UK and the USA. Visual Age Java training centre in collaboration with the IBM, Students’ Serious Software Developers Cell, mandatory students internship with the leading Software houses and IT firms are some of the example of the highest linkage level.

Computing and internet facilities: State of the art computing and internet services are the salient features of KIIT. The KIIT has four computer laboratories, equipped with more than 200 Pentium II/III workstations for students at the moment, connected to the Institute’s local area network. The machines run on Windows NT 4.0 and Linux operating system.

Most advanced internet services are being provided at the KIIT , including individual account for every students (home and abroad) for E-mail services. A fast-dedicated link through satellite at 256 KBPS is available for browsing the World Wide Web (www).

Besides this KIIT has a wide and varied pool of computing resources in addition to the internet facility, for instance Laser and Line printers for printing facilities. KIIT has its own website, which is regularly updated by a full time webmaster. It provides all the related information to the user.

KIIT also claims to provide an exclusive teaching and learning style which can hardly be matched anywhere else. KIIT introduces its students to a unique, almost foreign learning atmosphere. Here teachers’ role is basically based on extensive knowledge of the subject to guide the students in their exploration and discovery. "Student Centered" learning pattern determines the way a student’s work is organized. While individual subject modules have their own specific variations, the basic pattern for weekly work of each one is made up singular hour’s lecture, three hours of "Directed Unsupervised Activity", followed by a single tutorial hour. Teaching and learning set up at KIIT provides wide range of activities like lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops for students to learn.

KIIT provides extensive library facilities to supplement the students in their academic activities. KIIT claims as one of the professional computer libraries in the country. The library lays particular emphasis on the area of computer science related to its principal research interests i.e Java, Internet, Human computer interaction, software engineering etc. Counselling services are also provided to the students for their guidance.

KIIT aims to act as as beacon for professional education for others to follow and also to provide IT trained professionals in the country. KIIT is here, now students will decide the standard and claims of the institute regarding services. It is encouraging that progress is being done in the country regarding IT education.B
