The strong cargo market as well as growing air traffic market offering
attractive opportunities for international airliners to promote their business activities
Hanspeter Wegmueller, General Manager of Swissair, Pakistan, observed
this while introducing an additional flight from Pakistan. Among the export cargo the
mango phenomenon has added spice to the export cargo from Pakistan. He was of the view
that Pakistan is a growing market and has the potential to become one of the attractive
business centres for the international airlines. The cut-throat fare competition going on
in the airline business is however a discouraging factor which should be taken up by the
national airline i.e. PIA.
Swissair has introduced its 4th flight in a week between Switzerland
and Pakistan from July 17. The Swissair now operates its flights on Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday and Saturday every week.
When his attention was drawn towards some other European airlines which
have seized their flight operations by shifting their operational venue from Karachi to
Dubai, Hanspeter said with a smile that this vacuum created by other airlines also
provided room for Swissair to expand its operations. He however said that despite best
airport facilities provided by Jinnah Terminal at Karachi, the fuel and landing charges
are higher as compared to other airports in the region. He said that government has
realized the higher landing charges and fuel cost in Pakistan and has taken some remedial
measures, however room still exists for improvement.
Elaborating the flight operations from Karachi, Hanspeter said that the
additional day of operation is on Mondays. At the same time, Swissair's already popular
Saturday evening flight gets a new routing and will henceforth operate via Abu Dhabi. Thus
Swissair now offers also a weekly connection between Karachi and Abu Dhabi, enhancing the
possibilities for the Pakistani passengers to use Swissair between Pakistan and the 2
major UAE destinations i.e. Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The four weekly flights from Switzerland to Pakistan are now operated
on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday returning the same evening back to Zurich
with an early morning arrival at Europe's most passenger friendly airport. Immediate
connections are offered to a large number of cities in Europe and many important gateways
in the U.S and Canada.
Swissair's new enhanced schedule reflects the airline's confidence in
being a popular European airline in Pakistan and its well known 'tradition of hospitality
