The water level has reduced to a
record low at Tarbela and Mangla dams this summer. It reached zero level at Hub dam, a
major source of supply for Karachi. Rivers are also waiting for rains to come out of the
extremely deficient flows. Consequently, the pang of water crisis equally hitting the
urban and rural life this year in Pakistan. Karachi against its requirement of 700-800
million gallon per day (MGPD) is getting only 435 MGD. The above situation is
self-explanatory of the water problems faced by the people of Karachi. Out of 114
hydrants, 86 are illegal and trifling with the health and life of the citizens by
supplying contaminated water to the citizens.
