Next 20 years of computing

Intel Corporation's Dr. David Tennenhouse, vice president and director of research, delivered the opening keynote speech at Intel's Computing Continuum Conference, a landmark gathering of 500 attendees from research, academia and industry who met to present and exchange ideas about the future of computing. In his keynote speech, Tennenhouse explained that the computing industry is approaching the point at which the number of networked interactive computers will surpass the number of people in the world. Tennenhouse urged the research community to lift its sights toward the next quantum leap in capability, which will occur once networked computers outnumber human beings by hundreds or thousands to one, and craft a research agenda that can lead to increased human productivity and quality of life.

Tennenhouse projected that in the year 2000 the industry will produce eight billion microcomputers, more than 95 per cent of which will be embedded into objects such as equipment, buildings, machinery, cars and clothing.

The Computer Continuum Conference is sponsored by Intel in association with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communication products.

IBA graduate directory launching ceremony

IBA's graduating class of May 2000 launched their first product, the Graduate Directory, to the market on 22 March 2000.

Several corporate guests, headhunters, faculty members and students attended the event that was conducted at the Marriott Hotel, Karachi.

The Poolside of the Hotel was decorated beautifully. The programme started with Tilawat of Holy Quran and then Welcome speech by the class representative, Mr. Ghulam Murtaza Shaikh. Followed by very informative speeches conducted by several guests who shared their experiences and ideas with the students. Among these were Mr. Shakeel Ahmed, Director Finance, Pakistan Stell Mills, Mr. Danishmand, Chairman, Suzuki Motorcycles, Mr. Sohail Hashmi, Ex-President, Marketing Association of Pakistan, Ms. Margi Rehman, Human Resource and Development Manager, Lever Brothers and Mr. Zafar Mannan, Director Human Resource, Indus Motors. These speakers spoke about their experiences and expectations from MBAs. They also appreciated the role of IBA in Business Education. Before concluding, the Director of IBA Dr. Zafar H. Zaidi wished the students all the best in their endeavours and congratulated the organizing committee for their high level of organization, which was evident at the function. The Graduates Directory was then introduced by the Chief Editor Prince Khurram and after that the chief organizer of the event Syed Faizan Ahmed Kalim thanked the guest for their presence and wished the graduates good luck for their future. The guests were then asked to proceed for dinner.

However, before the function took place, several activities were conducted in order to hold the event. The most important of which was actually producing the Graduate Directory, which contained the profiles of all the students in the class. The committee responsible for this was headed by Prince Khurram and under him worked Erum Naz, Najia Mehboob, Nazim Khurshid, Tahir Razzak and Ahmed Mustafa Batlay. These people along with the help of Syed Faizan Ahmed Kalim and Ghulam Murtaza Shaikh gave their best to produce the same. Their committed work was well appreciated by the guest.

The Graduate Directory Launch Ceremony was then a big task. Contacting corporate guest and inviting them at the occasion was not easy. But the Chief Organizer of the event, Syed Faizan Ahmed Kalim led and guided the team and was there to help in and oversee all activities. Other members the committee included Ghulam Murtaza Shaikh, who was there all the time to cooperate. Shukri Rehman, who handled the guest relations and faxes; Najia Naeem, who make arrangements for all the guest speakers and managed the media; Sukaina Ali, who was responsible for the sponsorship of the event.

The ceremony includes many other arrangements like the booking of the venue, the decorations and many more. The programme was beautifully organized and managed in a very professional manner as expected from the IBA Graduates. Ofcourse the credit goes to Syed Faizan Ahmed Kalim, Ghulam Murtaza Shaikh and Najia Naeem for their devoted and sincere work. Apart from this the appreciation and guidance of Director, Dr. Zafar H. Zaidi, the Deputy Director, Dr. Ejaz Ahmed, the Students' Counselor, Dr. Zennal Ismail and the Faculty Members was better than anything to motivate the organizing team. The web address of the class is mba-2000.tripod.com.
