New disciplines have been added to broaden the outlook of graduates

Dr. Anwar Ali Shah G. Syed, is a Professor of Business Administration and the present Director of IBA, University of Sindh, Jamshoro and the founder Director of Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Sukkur. He is hailing from a remote area of small village Ubrio Shah Taulka Moro District Naushehro Feroze. He had primary education in the same village, and Matriculation from the Government High School New Jatoi and earned his B.Com (1st Class) from Sindh, College of Commerce, Hyderabad. He has M.Com. (First class 2nd position) & L.L.B (First Class First Position) Degree from the University of Sindh and MBA & Ph.d. in Business Administration from the foreign Universities of Leeds - England, and Cardiff Business School — University of Wales, United Kingdom, respectively . Earlier, Dr. Shah has served as a Director and Professor Institute of Business Studies (IBS) University of Sindh. Jamshoro, between the year 1993 and 1996. Dr. Shah, started his career as Lecturer in Commerce Department, University of Sindh Jamshoro from November 5th 1977. Dr. Shah also has held a number of important position in MCB and RMCP. Keeping in view his marvellous and splendid services as well as having extensive academic research record, the services of Dr. Anwar Ali Shah G. Syed were requisitioned by the Commissioner Sukkur Division & Chairman Board of Governors IBA Sukkur, Mr. Ghulam Ali Shah Pasha through Honourable Governor of Sindh, and he was appointed as Director (Chief Executive) and Chairman Academic Board at IBA Sukkur. The services of Dr. Shah also are being utilized in other prestigious Institutions at top ranking level, like Chairman, National Review Committee in Business Administration, UGC, Ministry of Education Government of Pakistan Islamabad. He is member of Doctoral Committee, Affiliation Committee and Academic Board of IBA Karachi. The previous services rendered by Dr. Shah as senator, Syndicate member and member Finance and Planning Committee University of Sindh, were so remarkable and qualitative that he was decorated with Gold Medal by the University of Sindh. His field of research and teaching include Management, Human Resource Management, Industrial Relations, Business Policy, Business Law, Marketing and Economics. He has published a large number of research articles in the journals of national and international repute, including book reviews. Dr. Shah is author of a Book " Banking for Inter Commerce" prescribed for all Boards working in Pakistan and abroad. Dr. Shah has remained Ph.D and M.Phil. Guide, both in the fields of commerce and Business Administration at University of Sindh, Jamshoro.

Following are the excerpts from the interview.

PAGE: How do you rate your institution while making a comparison with similar institutions operating in the country?

Dr. Shah: Well, we rate our Institute amongst top few business schools operating in the country.

Q. What new discipline /courses have been added to broaden the outlook of graduates?

A. We have introduced new computer oriented courses in order to meet the requirements of the job market. In addition, we have added one new field of specialization i.e. Management Information System (MIS) as demanded by the job market.

In this regard, we are also planning to add new courses to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. This process of revision of courses will be completed in a very short period of time so that it may be introduced in the year 2000.

Q. How far the existing curriculum of business schools satisfies the need of students in improving their overall education ?

A. Existing curriculum of various business schools appears to be satisfying the needs of the students but there is always room for improvement. Our curriculum is at par with the leading business schools of the country.

Q. What types of Seminars/lectures are organized to improve the overall knowledge of students about Pakistan economy?

A. Seminars/ lectures on both micro and macro level issues are arranged regularly. These topics include budget, inflation, unemployment, poverty, privatization and other related areas such as marketing, financial management, TQM, and electronic commerce. For these seminars, we invite both national and foreign scholars to present their papers and conducting the lectures. Besides, our faculty and students are also encouraged to participate and contribute their papers in the seminars. Debates, workshops, group discussions are common feature of our academic life of our Institute with an insight to develop the communication skills of our students and thereby building their confidence.

Q. How successful has been the strategy to admit students in BBA after intermediate examination?

A. Since last few years, we have also introduced the system of aptitude test/pre-entry test and we have been successful to take students on merit.

Q. Has your institution been successful in arranging linkages with foreign universities?

A. We are in process in establishing the linkages with some foreign universities.
