The Video Game Adaptations with Most Box Office Success

by Katharina Buchholz

Video games have come a long way from clunky 2D optics and shrill sound effects. This Thursday marks the 30th anniversary of the release of the first edition of the video game Prince of Persia, which embodied the low-tech characteristics of the early days of the genre like few others.

But the games sector has not only evolved in terms of visuals and player experience. Gaming has found its way into mainstream culture. Its characters now grip the imagination of a large and increasingly mature audience – so much that Hollywood had to get on board too.

Games turned into movies are not a weird concept anymore for audiences around the world. The Prince of Persia story first got a 3D makeover as a game and then the Hollywood treatment in 2010, with Jake Gyllenhaal playing the prince. The movie grossed more than $90 million, making it the fifth most successful movie ever to be based on a video game.

According to Box Office Mojo, this year’s Pokémon Detective Pikachu is already the most successful film in the video games category, grossing more than $144 million since May, followed by the original 2001 Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft and the Angry Bird Movie from 2016.
