GSMA CALLS ON PAKISTAN GOVERNMENT TO UNLOCK ITS DIGITAL FUTURE:

The GSMA today set out a number of measures that Pakistan will need to take in order to close the digital divide in the country and reach its Vision 2025 goals.  In a white paper prepared by GSMA Intelligence, supported by Deloitte, it identified that only 47 per cent of the population subscribe to a mobile service, and only 10 per cent subscribe to a 3G or 4G data service.

FACEBOOK WOULD SEND A DELEGATION TO PAKISTAN FOR TALKS OVER BLASPHEMOUS CONTENT:

The interior ministry on Thursday said Facebook would send a delegation to Pakistan for talks over blasphemous content. The social media giant has also nominated a focal person to contact the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), expressing the hope that dialogue would lead to resolution of the issue.

Uber president Jeff Jones is leaving the company after less than six months. A source at the taxi booking app told the BBC the resignation was “completely unexpected”. They said Mr Jones was frustrated the company was hiring a new chief operating officer and that he was not among the candidates.

BUZZ ALDRIN TAKES YOU TO MARS IN VR:

Buzz Aldrin, the second man to set foot on the Moon, has launched a virtual reality movie detailing his plan to get humans to Mars. The film – Cycling Pathways to Mars – lasts just under 10 minutes and features the astronaut as a hologram narrating the experience.

The tidal wave of fake news spreading across the web has brought mounting pressure on Google and Facebook to face up to their responsibilities as platforms for false information. But now the two web giants are under pressure over another kind of fakery – fake advertising.

GOOGLE PULLS BEAUTY AND THE BEAST ‘AD’ FROM HOME:

Google has removed audio about the movie Beauty and the Beast which played out unprompted on Google Home. “By the way, Disney’s live action Beauty and the Beast opens today,” the smart speaker said after listing the time, weather and travel update.

PAKISTAN ASKS FACEBOOK TO HELP FIGHT BLASPHEMY:

Pakistan says it has asked Facebook to help investigate “blasphemous content” posted on the social network by Pakistanis. Facebook has agreed to send a team to Pakistan to address reservations about content on the social media site, according to the interior ministry.

GOOGLE’S CRISIS OF CONFIDENCE:

Matt Brittin’s appearance at a London advertising conference could not have been better timed – for the watching journalists at least. Google’s European boss took to the stage at Advertising Week Europe just as the storm over adverts appearing next to extremist videos on YouTube hit new heights.

GOOGLE APOLOGIZES AFTER ADS APPEAR NEXT TO EXTREMIST CONTENT:

Google’s European boss has apologised after adverts from major firms and government agencies appeared next to extremist content on its YouTube site. It came after Marks and Spencer became the latest firm to pull its online ads over the issue, joining others such as Audi, RBS and L’Oreal.

YOUTUBE RESPONDS TO CRITICISM OF LGBTQ VIDEO ‘BLOCKING’:

YouTube has released a statement after criticism over videos discussing LGBTQ topics like dating and attraction being hidden on the site. Restricted Mode aims to filter out “more mature content” and is switched off by default.

MCDONALD’S INDIA DELIVERY APP ‘LEAKS USER DATA’:

McDonald’s delivery app in India leaked personal information about 2.2 million users, a security firm has found. A poorly configured server gave anyone access to the names, emails, home addresses and phone numbers of users, said Fallible.

UBER PLEDGES TO MAKE DRIVERS HAPPIER:

Uber’s relationship with its drivers has become increasingly strained, the company admitted, as it vowed to improve its service. The ride-sharing firm told the media some of its policies were “unintentionally stacked against drivers”.

APPLE LAUNCHES RED IPHONE 7 AND VIDEO APP:

Apple has launched a red version of its iPhone 7 and 7 Plus as well as a new video app for iOS. The red iPhone celebrates Apple’s 10-year partnership with Red, an organisation that aims to combat Aids.
