AKUH provides second-to-non all health and education facilities in Pakistan

The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Karachi, set up during 1985, is the primary teaching site of the Aga Khan University’s (AKU) Faculty of Health Sciences.

The hospital offers a wide range of secondary and tertiary care, counting diagnosis of disease and team management of patient care. The hospital’s multi-disciplinary approach to diagnosis and care ensures a continuum of safe and high quality care for patients – with all services under one roof.

The hospital promotes the Aga Khan University’s aim of promoting human welfare in general and the welfare of the citizens of Pakistan in particular, by disseminating knowledge and giving instruction, training, research, and service in the health sciences.

No doubt Aga Khan University is Pakistan’s largest private medical institute and hospital. The Aga Khan Medical Complex built on a 65-acre site in Karachi. The building has been cautiously planned to take into account the history, climate, environment, symbolism and the spiritual values of the Muslim culture.

The University is a leader in nursing education. Recognising the vital lifeline nurses offer to any healthcare system, AKU organized Pakistan’s first professional nursing program over 30 years ago. Presently, AKU continues to lead the way in Pakistan and East Africa, offering undergraduate and graduate programs also conversion, professional and continuing education courses.

AKU makes it easier for nursing professionals to access world-leading education, to upgrade skills and to build new knowledge.

The AKU worldwide network of libraries supports students and faculty in their study, teaching and research needs.

Moreover, digital initiatives at the University libraries reflect the vision of a distributed and flexible technology infrastructure that improves access, manipulation, storage, distribution, and integration of information and services throughout AKU.

Being a part of digital world, AKU has planned to shift to electronic resources where possible. Faculty of Health Sciences and Institute for Educational Development Libraries at Karachi has taken initiative with the support of Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. It is subscribing to 25 databases by HEC, whereas eight databases are being subscribed through AKU in its own capacity.

The total number of journals accessible from AKU Karachi campus is 12,000. Apart from e-journals, it is subscribing to 25,000 e-books which are accessible by campus-wide network. Apart from online databases, FHS Karachi library is subscribing to 307 international journals.

Users can access to most of these journals from campus-wide network, while some of them are password protected. The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) Library, Karachi is also sustaining a bibliographic database of medical literature of Pakistan with the name of AKUMEDLIT.

AKU libraries in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda) are also part of this shift and are subscribing to a number of electronic databases. Some of the initiatives include Health Internetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) and the Program for Enhancement of Research Information (PERI).
